Its an Italian American holiday for the most part and since the Italian American community is rather small here there are not enough people to stand up to those on the left that say Columbus was a bad person.

Yep. At least that's what I was taught in school. I always thought it was strange. Columbus is the one who found America (or at least the most famous and well known person to have found it) and it was named for someone else.

Perhaps its cause he thought he was in the West Indies. Voyages back then were frought with peril. Not like they had a DROID with a GPS app in it. 😛 So getting from one piece of land to another and still being alive was a major accomplishment.
