Thanks Cypress are very hard to grow. I planted over a 100 seeds just to get these 3 little guys.

Yea it was a lot of work. The seeds need to be soaked for 24 hours in warm water then only those that sink are viable. Then those seeds need to be refrigerated for a month then they are planted. Then it takes about another month before some will sprout.

Wow. I never realized that some seeds needed special prep before they went into the ground. 🙂

Yea some are even worse. Yew tree seeds need to be refrigerated for a month then kept warm for a month then need to be refrigerated for another month then planted. After that they can be planted but may take a year or two to germinate.

These trees live a very long time. Cypress a 1000 to 2000 years. Yew trees 4000 to 5000 years. The seeds are hard to germinate so the environment does not get overrun with Yew and Cypress trees. 🙂

Part of the reason I looked into these trees was to see if I could speed up the germination process or increase the number of seedlings. Yew trees produce a powerful anticancer drug called taxol.

The daytime have warmed up a lot 🙂 but the night temps still are very very cold which remains a problem for my widdle baby trees. 🙁
