The Self Referential Thread

There are allegations he commuted some felons sentence who was a relative of some LA politician. Not sure if its true or not at this point but I think it might be under investigation.

😀 😛

That is really dirty politics. Sigh.

Here is the story from FOX. Seems the Mayor was not involved as far as I can tell but rather a former State Senator.

Anger and outrage. That's the reaction after outgoing Governor Schwarzenegger reduced the prison sentence for the son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

San Diego’s City Attorney is calling it cronyism- saying the decision was politics and not justice. Meanwhile, no one from the former governor's camp has been willing to comment at all on the sentence reduction Schwarzenegger ordered.

Esteban Nunez will serve less than half of his original sentence for the killing of Luis Santos.

"I think that if it had happened to his family or Fabian's family- if their kids had been killed, that they would think 7 years is not nearly enough," said Kathy Santos, mother of the boy killed.

It was October 2008. After being kicked-out of a frat party, Esteban Nnunez and friend Ryan Jett got into a drunken fight with another group of students at San Diego State University. Jett has confessed to stabbing Luis Santos in the heart during that fight. Esteban Nunez confessed to stabbing another man, who lived.

In his statement, then Governor Schwarzenegger writes that he does not discount the gravity of the offense. Still he signed the order to commute Esteban's sentence on New Year's Eve.

"We cannot believe that he would do such a thing. It's a back door deal at the last hour of his office," Santos said.

Both Nunez and Jett took plea deals and avoided going to trial. When they were both given the same sentence, it prompted an angry outburst from Fabian Nunez, a one-time Democratic California Assembly Speaker and a collaborator with Governor Schwarzenegger on green energy legislation.

Several visits to Fabian Nunez's Sacramento home today ended with no one available to comment about the reduction in Esteban's sentence.

But Charles Sevilla, the attorney who prepared the commutation request, said Esteban had no prior record and wasn't the one who stabbed Luis Santos.

Sevilla said he believes Nunez was over-sentenced to prove that he wasn't benefitting from his father’s status.
