Not good. There is a company called Zero Surge that makes the best lighting protectors around. The units are a bit big and not cheap about 200 dollars.

Zero Surge makes heavy duty Surge Protectors. Theirs is essentially a large capacitor that slowly discharges through an inductive load. That is supposedly the safest and best way to protect.

I think a good UPS (uninterrupted power supply) would be fine. It offers decent protection against surges and offers you time to safely turn off the computer in the event of a power loss.

The Zero Surge thingie is only a surge protector it offers no battery back up so you need to buy a UPS anyway with that. So it would get pricey. 🙂
