Dwelling on health issues and/or the idea of impending death can increase the suck factor in one's life exponentially (which I know from personal experience!)
Getting older also means that you've got life experience. You've seen massive cultural changes and know how they tie into what's happening now. You probably know better than to make certain mistakes. You hopefully have a much better handle on what your life's about and what you want from it than you had when you were in college.
For those of us who are in their 20's, 30s and 40's, turning 50-something is not the end of the world, far from it (even though it can indeed be rather sobering to think of how much time has gone by). Anyway, get that Geritol out of here, I'm going to have myself a brew and put on a movie!
