I will actually be working tomorrow as a poll worker. I report at 5am to help get the polling place ready to open at 6am. We will likely be working until about 10pm, since everybody who is in line by 9pm gets to vote. (At 9pm, a cop goes to the end of the line, assures the last person in line that he or she will get to vote, and shoes away anybody who tries to join the line after that.)Milagros may be needed for his math skills in the voting count tomorrow.
Before you commend me for doing good civic duty, I will get paid $300 [before taxes] by the City of New York for the day.
I will not be counting any votes. The scanning machines that read the paper ballots do that automatically. I will be directing people to the correct table. (As in, "You live at 25 Central Park West? Then you are in Election District 93, third table in the first row.") The polling place where I will be working serves seven election districts.
