Well, it was a dissapointing year for Vikings fans such as myself. To be honest, I was prepared for it. In fact, prior to the start of the season, one of my Unapologetic Predictions for 2010 was that Minnesota would not come close to last year's success and would miss the playoffs...one I'm none too happy to have been right about.
Anyhooo....
First off, a fond farewell to Brett Favre. Should he have come back? Who knows...I don't. Say what you will, though...no one has given so much of himself to this game we love. There's no tarnish on the legacy of one of the true greats to have ever played the game. When Peyton Manning retires, he'll be in the booth. Brett Favre will be a coach. I just don't see him able to walk away from football.
So, what can the Vikes take away from this season?
1) KEEP LESLIE FRAZIER AS HEAD COACH! The players respond to him and respect him, something sorely lacking in the HC position around Minneapolis for quite some time. Additionally, as has been the pattern for the Vikes, good coordinators are let go in favor of questionable coaches...only to see those coordinators go on to win Super Bowls for other teams. (Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy, et. al.) Save yourselves the time and effort and retain the tough-as-nails Frazier. we need a guy like him.
2) Build around your young QB. Yes, we have one, and it's not Tarvaris Jackson. Joe Webb is our quarterback and I think he's proven it. Has he done anything amazing? No. Will he single-handedly "save the team"? No. But...does he have the talent to develop within this system? Absolutely. The one thing the Vikes have done bass-ackwards for decades is to build a team then think of the QB position last. Who was the last true Vikings "franchise" level quarterback...one immediately associated with the team? Fran Tarkinton, perhaps. We seem to be content with grabbing players near retirement, out of retirement or looking for new homes after burning bridges with other teams. We don't need other teams' castoffs, so please...don't even LOOK at Vince Young in the offseason. It's such a "Vikings" move to go after a guy like that. Develop what you have...and what you have in Joe Webb is a potential, albeit very young, Mike Vick-type athlete.
3) Take care of the stadium problems once and for all. An inflatable roof in an area that gets a mile of snow every year? Fuck that. Not only should Ziggy Wilf end ALL discussion about moving the team once and for all, they should...wait for it...go back outside!!! Yes, folks. The dome years have been fun, but I think it's time for 1/4th of the original Black-and-Blue division to actually play that way. Let Green Bay and Chicago come into town and play in the real frozen tundra of the Coldest Place on Earth. It would do you guys good to play outdoors again. Trust me on this one.
Here's to a better 2011!
