This one is running concurrent with Round 5, so make sure you're voting in both, folks! We'll do it this way to keep things moving along.

Well, I mentioned in the Round 5 thread about two big match-ups, and you guys are gonna hate me for this one. I was gonna save this round for later, but screw it, let's get it out of the way right now. I almost didn't put these two together, but I didn't know who else to put them up against. And, if I didn't, there's the possibility they'd just run the gamut and wind up pitted against the other anyway in the end. So, fans of each, make your voices heard to see who survives in the match-up of....

The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones

Have fun! This ought to be a good thread.

Had to go with The Beatles myself. Thier influence on rock music is simply immeasurable. I can't say I've loved everything they ever did, and was a much bigger fan of thier post-singles days, but they re-created music for generations to come.

As far as the Stones go....I can appreciate thier place in the lexicon of rock, but can't honestly say I was ever a great fan. I think it's the fact that they just don't know when to quit, sayin? I mean, I can't name a single song off of any of thier last 5 albums or so. They got up to Tattoo You in '81 and just went...ppppsssshhhffffwww.......down.

I love the Stones but this is absolutely the easiest one yet. No group has ever had the impact, the endurance, or the versatility of the Beatles. If the question is greatest band, I'll pick them against any other option.

i vote the stones dont like the beatles *runs and hides from everyone*

It was inevitable that these two bands once again face off in one of the most interesting debates in music...As always, I'll stick with The Beatles :dog:

My choice is:

The Beatles

The Rolling Stones have blues/r n b roots and they never forgot that. And they have the great Keith Richards, doesn't get any better than that.

But I'd have to say as far as changing the face of rock and roll and seeing how revolutionary their music is even in 2008, I vote The Beatles.

Frankie, there was never any doubt in my mind which way you would vote, brother. I also voted for The Beatles. They are my all time favorite band. They were my inspiration for learning to play piano.

I will follow the flock on this one and vote for "The Beatles"

The Stones are great, but the Beatles are beyond that. They are truly in a class very few other bands could match.

The Beatles = the original boy band

The Rolling Stones = a musical dynamo that has been an institution circa the 1960's.

The Beatles are so overrated its nauseating. For a better comparison to our younger generation its like Nirvana getting all the credit for the Seattle scene when Pearl Jam is obviously the better band. Plain and simple the Beatles were first but the Stones are the best.

Omg to compare the Beatles to some boy band is just not apt. Their music went so far beyond the typical peppy pop songs or love ballads. They did half an album on Yellow Submarine that was purely instrumental. They touched on darker themes like murder, or hard drugs that was totally new to mainstream music at the time. And Paul McCartney can flat out just sing (see Yesterday, Helter Skelter, Golden Slumbers to name just a few of his best off the top of my head). The Stones absolutely are awesome and one of the great musical institutions of the 20th century, but the Beatles they were not.

I went with the Stones. The Beatles will always be rock's greatest innovators, and they changed the world in a way no other band ever has, but I just like the Stones' music better. There's other reasons certainly. The Stones more or less invented the popular idea of what living like a rock star actually means. And they generally a lot more successful than The Beatles in using music to deliver a completely visceral impact in the listener. Helter Skelter might give you a slight sense of foreboding, but Gimme Shelter is the apocalypse coming out of your speakers.

So far most of these are gonna be "blowouts" Dave...

Beatles get my vote hands down...I was 9 when they hit the US and music was never the same for me again.....:dogpile:

While "Yellow Submarine" is my pick-me-up song, my all time favorite song will forever be "Wild Horses" by The Rolling Stones.

The Beatles are probably better overall, but "Wild Horses" has me voting the Stones.

I acknowledge the Beatles' greatness ... but I'm more of a Stones-man , myself. They have ( had ) a bit more of an edge & raunch to their music that the Beatles kinda lacked.

Hey, Drew! They were my inspiration for learning to play bass. As great as all their albums are, it was The Beatles, better known as "The White Album" that really gave me inspiration. Listen to the bassline in "Dear Prudence," for example. I bought my first bass guitar after listening to that album.

I tend to think that anyone who considers The Beatles simply a boy band hasn't really listened to anything they released except "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand." But to be fair, Bob Dylan once told John Lennon (concerning those two songs), "Your songs are okay but they don't really say anything." Dylan helped inspire them to take their music to new dimensions, which they ultimately did.

I'd rather not get into a debate about this. I can listen to the music of The Beatles and The Stones and receive much listening pleasure from both bands. And if The Beatles' music seems like boy band stuff to you, storm, there's nothing I can say that will change your mind.

Okay, one last thought: When you realize that there's only six years separating the Beatles first album Please Please Me and Abbey Road, their 'swan song,' you've got to admit it takes a lot of talent for anyone to show that much progress in such a short amount of time.

Strider - "Gimme Shelter" is one of those Stones songs that could swing my vote if everything they did was like that. I like your analogy, spot-on. Powerful tune, all full of ghetto angst.

Alchemy - Sabbath already won thier frist round ove Deep Purple.

Ray - Yeah, some of these first brackets are probably gonna be leaning heavily one way...what's gonna be interesting is when the winners start facing off, and the dregs are weeded out.
