Town Hall Meetings and their True Cause

Hey guys, wanna really know where all that crap in our town hall meetings is coming from? Yeah, the insurance lobby and Repugs would have you believe it's a "grassroots" effort by concerned citizens...but maybe it's time to shed some truth on this. Do a little digging...follow the paper trails and you might find some interesting stuff like I did. 😉

**************************************

This morning, Politico reported that Democratic members of Congress are increasingly being harassed by “angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior” at local town halls. For example, in one incident, right-wing protesters surrounded Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) and forced police officers to have to escort him to his car for safety.

This growing phenomenon is often marked by violence and absurdity. Recently, right-wing demonstrators hung Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) in effigy outside of his office. Missing from the reporting of these stories is the fact that much of these protests are coordinated by public relations firms and lobbyists who have a stake in opposing President Obama’s reforms.

The lobbyist-run groups Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks, which orchestrated the anti-Obama tea parties earlier this year, are now pursuing an aggressive strategy to create an image of mass public opposition to health care and clean energy reform. A leaked memo from Bob MacGuffie, a volunteer with the FreedomWorks website Tea Party Patriots, details how members should be infiltrating town halls and harassing Democratic members of Congress:

Rocking the Town Halls: Best Practices
We here in Fairfield County, Connecticut conducted an action at Congessman Jim Himes' town hall meeting. We believe there are some best practices which emerged from the event and our experience, which could be useful to activists in just about any district where their Congressman has supported the socialist agenda of the Democrat leadership in Washington.

– Artificially Inflate Your Numbers: “Spread out in the hall and try to be in the front half. The objective is to put the Rep on the defensive with your questions and follow-up. The Rep should be made to feel that a majority, and if not, a significant portion of at least the audience, opposes the socialist agenda of Washington.”

– Be Disruptive Early And Often: “You need to rock-the-boat early in the Rep’s presentation, Watch for an opportunity to yell out and challenge the Rep’s statements early.”

– Try To “Rattle Him,” Not Have An Intelligent Debate: “The goal is to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda. If he says something outrageous, stand up and shout out and sit right back down. Look for these opportunities before he even takes questions.”

The memo above also resembles the talking points being distributed by FreedomWorks for pushing an anti-health reform assault all summer. Patients United, a front group maintained by Americans for Prosperity, is currently busing people all over the country for more protests against Democratic members. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the NRCC, has endorsed the strategy, telling the Politico the days of civil town halls are now “over.” (Editor's note. What is it with politicians from Texas, anyway?)

Meanwhile, AHIP, the trade group and lobbying juggernaut representing the health insurance industry is sending staffers to monitor town halls and other right-wing front groups are stepping up their ad campaign to smear reform efforts. The strategy for defeating reform — recently outlined by an influential lobbyist to the Hill newspaper as “delay” then “kill” — is becoming apparent. By delaying a vote until after the August recess, lobbyists are now seizing upon recess town halls as opportunities to ambush lawmakers and fool them into believing there is wide opposition to reform.

In an update, Amy Menefee, communications director of Americans for Prosperity and its anti-health reform group Patients United, wrote to ThinkProgress regarding this post:

"Several blogs have picked up your post: http://thinkprogress.org/2009/07/31/recess-harassment-memo/ which mentions Americans for Prosperity's efforts next to your mention of Bob MacGuffie's memo about town hall meetings. Mr. MacGuffie's memo was his own work. I would appreciate your help in correcting the erroneous rumor people have passed around that this memo came from AFP. We have encouraged our members to attend town halls, ask questions and register their opinions about issues including health care -- as all citizens should do. We always promote civil dialogue and do not condone disruptive behavior."

Ahem....

As noted in the post, MacGuffie is a volunteer who actively posts and volunteers with the website Tea Party Patriots. A review of the sponsoring organizations reveals that both FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity are sponsors of the website as "Freedom Coalition" partners. A few months before joining Americans for Prosperity, Menefee herself worked for the medical device/pharmaceutical industry-funded "think-tank" called the Galen Institute.

For myself...I actually, in a way, hope these continue. The out-of-power party has done everything it can possibly think of to drive young, intelligent voters away from them, turn the party into a caricature voiced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter....circus clowns at best, and disruptive and dangerous influences at worst, and pretty much everything in between. The more this stuff goes on, the more ridiculous intelligent people will find it, and the sooner we can get back to actually fixing things.

What amazes me the most is that most of the people the insurance lobby is bussing in to these meetings are the ones who benefit from a health-insurance overhall the most.

What a crazy world.

It's not about the labels. It's about insurance companies and the representatives and senators they "contribute to" losing the billion-dollar gravy train they've been riding since deregulation. They stand to lose a lot of free money, and will do whatever it takes to keep it. They could care less about the "will of the American People" or about their welfare. Just the American Dollar.

Not long ago, some of the Tea Partiers tried to crash an event here in Arkansas, but it turned out to be a private dinner with an entry fee of a couple of hundred dollars a person.

I don't know if they got in or not. If so, I hope the nice police officer gave them a good room for the night 🙂

Yeah....the Tea Partiers. Another group that artifically inflated their numbers, and claimed to be "grassroots" after being spurred into action by Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh.

well dude of course lobbyists are going to oppose something if they stand to lose money from it. its just how they operate. on the opposing side of this though (and this is just my personal position) i feel the whole free national healthcare thing is a bit socialist, and frankly, name me one country where socialism has worked. (soviet russia does not count given that the U.S.S.R no longer exists) I must also disagree with you about the likes of Rush Ann and sean, self important over inflated windbags they may be, I hardly think they're any danger to society. it all goes back to the famous quote "Sir, while i do not agree with what you say i'll defend to the death your right to say it" its kinda like the KKK, we're americans, we live in a glorious country where anyone can pretty much say whatever they please and get away with it, thus, giving some people the right to be dumb.

And dumb they accomplish.

This is what people need to look into, the actual facts. No one's talking about a government "takeover" of health care, just giving people an option. And even that isn't the meat of the debate or the attempt to overhaul health care. Would it be perfect? No. What is in America?

People are comparing the proposed changes to Canada's system, which is NOT what is being proposed at all.

I can't help but notice you forgot Bill O'Reilly. :lol He's the most inane of them all.. but Ann Coulter is the most insane. 😉

Don't even get me going on Ann Coulter. Please.

Sometimes I wonder if the amount of corruption in congress can ever be remedied.

I have very diametrically opposed views on the masses and democratic decision making. I will always support people's right to decide their own fate...even if I think that most people aren't qualified to sit the right way on a toilet seat.

If I may, The biggest problem with America is people think there are two sides to the coin. Two sides to an argument, always?

Why isn't life just a grid, where we can all be placed not "Right wing" or "Left wing." What about up and down?

I find myself top wing. Because I believe I'm above all this BS.

Here's some alarming stats for ya:

Percentage change since 2002 in average premiums paid to large U.S. health insurance companies: +87

Percentage change in the profits of the top ten insurance companies: +428

Which is why I register as an independant. We've gotten far too "left OR right" in the US. It's extremely divisive, and the only thing it helps are the bloated, self-serving cable news shows.

A grid would be nice. I see myself on the left just a bit, but I'm also a gun owner. That will immediately lump me as a "rightwing" or "libertarian". 😉

As a person in the health care field that will be DRAMATICALLY effected by this bill, can I ask a show of hands of all those who have read all 1000+ pages of said bill?

:::hears nothing but crickets, so speaks on:::

That is the problem. Not even the senators on the committee who WILL BE VOTING ON THIS have read it. They've even ADMITTED IT in the press and at town hall meetings. Why are they rushing to push this through without it being totally revealed to daylight? It smacks of the "Stimulus bill" that was so full of pork (from both sides, sadly) that "had to be rushed through or the sky will fall", only have only 6% of the stimulus in action and, lo and behold, most of the money put into use during 2012, re-election time.

Do we REALLY want the government controlling the health care industry? If you really read this bill, it contains rationing, and euthanasia components as it stands. Obama has stated in speeches in the past he wants a one-payer (translation= gov't controlled) health care system. It is recorded. His own words. I've seen the video. It's not doctored.

Just as I said during the election, he is seeking to make us a socialist nation. First the 'takeover' of GM, now healthcare. The Democrats have enough votes as a party to pass it, but the Blue Dogs won't budge, thank the Lord! People ARE reading the bill and making themselves known. It's pretty scary when you watch the CBS News and hear the press saying that the problem is this: We have 'too much democracy'... Too much???

The bear trap that Obama-rama and the Traveling Political Salvation show have stepped into is that, with the internet, people can actually READ and BE INFORMED! Nancy Pelosi compared those informed citizens with Nazi's. Harry Reid admits to being clueless to the contents of the bill he will be pushing to get passed. These are our elected leaders??? You want to trust them with YOUR health care decisions? I've opted out of the recession by managing my finances and getting out of debt. If this bill passes, NO ONE may be able to opt out. That is the scary part.

All that I think we need is for Medicaid eligibility requirements to be eased a bit so that more people who can't afford insurance can be covered, without excessive spending or a government "takeover" of the health-care system.

A grid would be nice. I see myself on the left just a bit, but I'm also a gun owner. That will immediately lump me as a "rightwing" or "libertarian". 😉

That's exactly where I fit on the political grid too; I'm registered as an Independent and am usually identified as a "left-leaning libertarian." You might enjoy the political-views quiz at http://politicalcompass.org/

here is a thought

Why not just suspend the constitution? After all the fucking govt.knows what's best for us

Now that the left is in charge, they cannot stand to be questioned How I fucking despise both the republicans and the democrats You people really think either side gives a fuck about us common folk?

Hawk...you really need to re-read that thing. It's been said time and time again that no one wants a government "takeover" of health care. The only people using that talking point are the town hall nuts. And the insurance companies that are bussing them in.

It's whay it's called a public "option". Option. Meaning you have a choice. Which studies show most people won't even take if they already have private coverage.

Most of this isn't even about where you'll get it from, just that you'll be able to get it. I'm going to assume here that you're covered. Most people who are don't want to see anything change. Don't worry...you'll be fine. No one's gonna take your coverage away. The reforms being discussed are to clean up the system itself, not completely trash what we have and build a new one from scratch. And for those of us who happen to work for companies that posted $840 million in profits last year and still claim they can't afford to insure their employees...this will be welcome.

I'd like to see the part where it says they're going to set up euthanasia panels and the like. Not the talking points or the sound bytes or the stuff that can be twisted (like no one tried to do when there was even stronger wording in that direction in a Bush bill a few years back)...but the actual page number and line. I'd like to see that if you can show it to me. Don't feel bad if you can't find it. John Stewart had a hard-core anti-reform activist on the other day and when asked for twenty minutes to show him where it says that, she couldn't find it either.

And that right there is the problem. Everyone points to one person, be they a Democratic or Republican president, and hopes for things to get done. It's Congress that's the issue. The Dems finally get the unbreakable majority they've wanted and can't even agree on what color to paint the walls. The Repubs are focused on nothing but sour-grapeing for the next 8 years. And the common folk of this nation sit here and rot, watching a once-proud society fall into ruin so the money machine can keep on a-rollin'.

If the Repubs had the unbreakable majority, then the Dems would be sour-grapeing Does health care need changing? Oh yes But what is the answer?

For those that want total govt. health care, take a look at the way veterans go through the V.A.

Well, for anyone who remembers the Republicans back when the Clinton administration attempted to overhaul things, the GOP kept claiming they had a better plan. Of course, after the Clinton plan was scraped, the Repubs did nothing to fix the bloated beast. Now, a decade or so later, they are on the floor of the house and senate, claiming the same thing: "We have a much better plan than the Dems". Yeah, suuure you do. Too bad that 3-trillion $'s we utterly wasted in Iraq couldn't have gone to some better purpose.

Here's what's going to happen: Congress will pass a health care reform bill, because the Dems have the majority and aren't going to let their man down, BUT, it will be heavily watered down and will accomplish far less than is needed to fix this ridiculous situation in any truly measurable way. Later, when Medicare crashes, the Republics will blame away at the Dems, and so on and so on. :aniyawn:

the answer is single payer

As a pharmacist in the VA system, I can say that if they do it right, it would work if they follow the VA model. I would say my Hem/Onc clinic treats and handles our patients very well. I have heard bad stories from some, but our facility is top notch.

Instead, they'll create something much worse. I don't trust either side of the aisle. Teddy Kennedy and the like have been trying to take over health care for years, and now I fear they will do it.

One payer the best? Then look forward to no innovation, even longer for new drugs to be approved, and more.

Dave, the problem with the current press as it stands is that I don't trust them to tell the truth. They are walking hand in hand with Obama. It's pretty bad when an entire live prime time press conference looks scripted. Now that I am caught up at work, I'll d/l the pdf file and read through it. After all, they plan on screwing up my profession and calling. I'll let you know what I find...

I know this is a free country...where everyone is entitled to freedom of speech..but seriously....Limbaugh should be de-radioed...O'Reilly should be de-televised...and Sarah Palin...de-microphoned...she's the one who came up with the smart phrase about death panels....wow and they consider her a valid candidate for President? These town hall meetings are getting the publicity they so want, thanks to the media..keep the media away, and those who are trying to shout everyone else down, will probably keep away themselves..

IMO...the town hall meetings are giving this country rather a bad reputation..i have friends who live elsewhere who have heard all about it and are amazed...

And forgive my ignorance..and i suppose i could google it...what are tea parties?
