damn it anyway..i should be sleeping in...waaaaaaa

Lol XD

I know what you mean! My house is like 5 or 6 blocks from a train station! I can't hear them during the day, but in the wee hours of the morning the shoot on through an annoy the crap outta me

Aren't there laws saying no excessive/explosively loud noises after 11:00 pm?

Train whistles, HAH! try living next to an Air Force Base. You should hear those C5-As when they fly by at low altitude. Sounds like an earthquake. Normally they route their landings so they don't do that. Yet, every now and then you get a good one. Personally I don't care, but the city had to work out a deal with them back when Desert Shield and Desert Storm first got under way.

As for trains, I love them. I love that sound off in the distance. I always have.

If I am not mistaken, the train operator has to blow the whistle whenever the train comes upon a street/railroad track intersection

I think that is law

I know it's annoying,but if it's a safety factor,then I see why they do it

When my grandparents had their farm, the train tracks were about 5 miles away, across a valley (and there was actual train service, including passenger service! I guess that dates me, doesn't it?). I loved hearing those distant train whistles reverberate across the valley as I lay in bed!

As for plane noises, one mistake I shall never make again is taking a hotel room near an airport!

Try it from the other end. Take a sleeping compartment (on Amtrak) with someone you love and listen to the air horns (whistles are long-gone) reverberate across the valleys and prairies. A good engineer knows how to tease the long-long-short-long standard signal for a grade crossing into a romantic call-and-response with the night.

I wonder why they have to blow their whistle. Every train crossing I've seen in Massachusetts has the flashing lights and bells so how could you not know a train was coming?

The train is about a mile from me and I hear it at night, which I think is the only time they run on that track.

A lot of the country is nothing like Massachusetts. Try North Dakota or Nebraska, for example. You will find "unguarded" grade crossings, protected only by a "railroad crossing" St Andrew's cross with "stop, look, and listen" underneath. Here in Chicago, a lot of suburbs have legislated that the train cannot sound horn at grade crossings until it is too late to prevent the accident, when some cell-phone using SUV driver decides to go around the gate because he can't see a train.

Call it natural selection...

Seriously, what a dumb law, banning a common-sense safety procedure just so property values won't go down.
