I would say that I am saddened by all the fighting going on in the thread, but I'm not. I wish people could be accepting and loving, and see past skin color, nationalities, socio-economic status, and gender; but hey... here we are yet again. It happens. There are even racist people here on the "All Non-Flaming Forum... TMF." And probably quite a few too, but hey it’s TMF: The wannabe most politically correct site on the web.
Trent Lott is probably an idiot! And YES! He is SOOOO out the door. The republicans don't want to be linked to racism of course. I'm sure there really are republicans in power that agree with his statement but have the common sense to keep their mouths shut. Just as there are republicans who completely disagree, yet equally say nothing. Who is the biggest sinner of the two?
It’s sort of like the governors race this year in Georgia.
I'm sure none of you heard of that. Well democrat Governor Barnes really f*cked up the teachers the last four years, and we came out in waves to vote his ass out. (Teachers come in all skin tones, by the way. That proves that issues can beat out the link of race and politics.) It’s the first time in YEARS that a republican has won in Georgia.
Well... not 5 minutes that the other guy, Sonny Purdue, got elected.... He gets on TV and says... QUOTE, "Free at last, Free at last, thank God almighty, we are Free At Last!" All of this while standing behind a confederate flag, and patting his "good old boys" on the back.
Meanwhile.... He apologizes and insists that his statements weren't meant to be racist. However they were stupid and inappropriate and hell, I can't tell whether he meant it as a racist slur or not. But damn.... He'll never get my vote ever again. (Made me feel equally stupid when my family, all democrats, voted for Purdue because I let them know the truth on how Barnes was screwing up education.)
Oh... lol after Governor Barnes lost, the FIRST thing he did was cut teachers' salaries. Said it had nothing to do with the fact that we came out the woodworks to vote for the other guy. (I am SOOOO moving OUT of Georgia. Think I'll go to New York. How's the education system there?)
Do I think Lott's a racist? I don't know. Hmmm... I think I agree with QB on this one. He sure did screw up his chance which does make the Republican Party look awful!
I am actually a republican. I have had republican ideals since I was a child. Only republican in my family (love the arguments. They rock!). But some of the people I helped elect in office keep saying suspect stuff like Lott and Perdue. It is an embarrassment and a slap in the face. It makes me not want to vote republican anymore and almost say to hell with politics in general.
By the way, I wonder if I'm a racist too because I am right wing? Blahahaha... that's funny. Oh wait! I forgot, just like any black republican, I'm a turncoat to my race. Is that it?
I think for any political party, votes are important. And I can't see Republicans saying, "Trying to get the black vote is a waste of time." After all... they try every year. And it’s not even only about black and white. I think it has to do with all ethnicities, gender, age, and socio-economic issues as well. It could be something as simple as women voting for a candidate because she is also a female. Or it could be the misconception of many voters viewing republicans as the rich, and the other parties as the regular "working" folks.
Most normal humans can't tell someone is racist just by looking at them. And as much as people are judged by their actions, they are also judged by the trash that comes out of their mouths as well (whether it is misconstrued or not). Just because a guy isn't burning crosses in someone's yard or using blatant racial slurs doesn't mean he is not a racist. So he looks like a nice guy.... *applause*.... LOL I wonder what idiots look like.
😉
I also think it is equally moronic to point and try to prove which race is more racist than the other. That's like trying to say which side of hell is most likely to scorch the skin off your ass. I'm sure everyone has racist stories to tell. I'm equally sure people have been hurt by others of various backgrounds. But racism and discrimination are just plain wrong. Can we agree on that? By the way, as a coach, I can tell you..... REFs just suck. PERIOD!
I think that is one of the reasons why I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to educate my students for success, yes. But with success, they have to be able to work with people. You can’t work with all types of people if you can’t see and understand that everyone has worth regardless as to what their outside looks like.
Do I say that to downplay racism? NO. To say it isn't painful regardless of whom it is focused on? NO. Am I saying that we should just sit still and let it destroy us? NO. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF! But if you do it in such a way that you are equally tearing down others, you are no better than the one who started it.
