Tropical Storm Sandy Headed For East Coast

I don't think this Storm will be a Flop.

We Found a Good Deal on a Good Generator so we Canceled our Hotel Reservations and got more Stuff, Water, Food, Batteries, etc

They're already saying Power could be out in some MD Areas for 6-9 Days. Even Longer Possibly.

I live in a barracks and the only thing we did was fill sandbags...then again were on high ground woth three foot thick stone walls.

Our "high wind warning" window (2 PM today to 5 PM Tuesday) has begun. Not much wind, moderate rain. Maybe this storm will turn out not to be that severe around here, but then again, the day is young. Got a case of bottled water, 3 flashlights, charged batteries, some canned food and some cookies which I baked yesterday. Glad I live on the side of a hill.

Right now the winds here are about 50 mph, with gusts., I may have posted how I used to live in Ft Lee, NJ for many years. There is a riverboat resturant near there called Binghamtons that I used to go to all the time. WABC TV showed pictures of the resturant, and it is completely flooded out.

I'm sorry for those who have lost power. I still have mine. I feel thankful for that. I had so many power outages in my 13 yrs in PA.

To all of us in this storm's path, stay in, and stay safe. Hopefully we will emerge from this with our lives and homes in tact.

Mitch

It's now raining steadily here and very windy, gusts up to gale force. 🙁 Worse to come. 🙁 🙁

The winds here have picked up, with gusts to 70 mph. In my father's zip code in Manhattan, the winds are gusting to 80 mph.

All they have on is news. I keep alternating between WABC in NY, and WPVI in Philly. Jim Gardner has been on for 3 hrs straight.

It will probably be a challenge for the next 24 hrs, then will start to die down.

Mitch

80 mile per hour gusts! Good grief, that storm cell is no joke, and I hope everybody is safe!

I've never seen anything like this before in my life.....and I mean never! Who thinks hurricane in NY and NJ? And Sandy's spreading the love here in Ohio too; my power was out all night and flickers out periodically still. I'm glad to have to chance to post because who knows what'll happen during the course of the day today.

Most local businesses were shut down due to power outages. The house across the street from me is going to need new siding and gutters. I've been hearing sirens since Sunday non stop; I'm just grateful that I only sat in the dark a few hours and nothing worse happens. My niece and my upstairs tenant both had to work today; they're better than I'll ever be because I'd be unemployed before you'd get me to go to work in this hott mess!

Lake waves are over 20 feet; I live about two miles away and it's water around me both east and west. I don't scare easily folks and it's all I can do to stay focused and not completely freak out! Unfortunately the alcohol didn't help much...........

Please be careful and safe out there; if you don't have to be out, stay home!

Gusts of over 90mph were reported in midtown Manhattan, specifically at 57th Street where a construction crane was blown off a roof.

Flooding is massive in lower Manhattan, where the Brooklyn/Battery tunnel is flooded. It may take several days to get the water out of several subway tunnels under the East River.

A fire raged out of control in the Breezy Point section of Queens, burning 50 houses to the ground. Flooding hampered firefighters from getting to the blaze.

But I am fine. On Sunday evening I went to the supermarket and bought enough food for several days. I still have electric power and I haven't gone outside since. 😀

Lights flickered a couple of times, but retained power. Three people killed in Pennsylvania due to falling trees and branches.

We are without power and any road access out is blocked. Trees down around the house and on power lines but thankfully not on our house. It was a very very scary night but we madeit.

kis, while hurricanes in this area are rare, they are not unheard of. In 1985, when I was 15, and we lived in CT, we had Hurricane Gloria, which was supposedly one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit that area. Winds of 100 mph. We had no power for more than 24 hrs, and my former best friend was without power for 5 days, as a tree had fallen on a power line at their house.

Many, many people are without power, including my two aunts in NJ.

The winds seem to be dying down, and the weather is slowly improving. I'm hoping to be able to get out tomorrow, as it would be four days then since I've left the house.

I am waiting to see how the people in New Jersey and New York City recover.

That is CT Mitch, not NY/NJ; simply unheard of at least in my lifetime anyway.

My yard was a hott mess......houses on both sides of me and across the street are just fine. Mother nature just made a mess of my lawn. My gutters will need replacing next year.....oh well! It could be a lot worse so I'm not complaining.

Well I hope this storm finds somewhere else to go......like back in the friggin' ocean!

When I first heard about Sandy and saw the shocking pictures and footage this morning, my first thoughts were 'I hope no one from the TMF has been affected!'

I hope you're all ok and that no one here on TMF has been affected by Sandy...if unfortunately so then affected as little as possible...My wishes and prayers go out to all those affected...

Sandy needs to Foxtrot Oscar now and leave the East Coast in peace.

I will NEVER moan or groan about London's weather ever again...

- Ash.

I've been inconvenienced but not much compared to what some people have suffered.

I doubt you will keep your pledge about London's weather. 😛

kis, actually, the hurricane that hit CT started in LI, and moved across LI sound. Additionally, there was a hurricane in Fort Lee,. NJ in 1976 when I was six years old.

The damage and flooding from this storm in NJ and NY was about the worst I can remember. Many of the subways here in NYC are flooded. It will take a while before things get back to normal.

I'm ok, amazingly never lost power. Lights flickered a few times and had some tree limbs slam into the house, that's about it. If you went south or east from my town though, major power outages. Many downed trees and power lines, and on the shoreline major devastation. the farther south you go from CT the worse it was and we had over 600,000 people without power, third worst on record for CT, only behind the two from last year. Thoughts and prayers by everyone effected especially shoreline of CT, NYC and NJ. I am very fortunate their was no damage to the house or much damage to the town in general, still a very devastating storm. Won't miss you Sandy.

I went into the city today for the first time since the storm. Much of the West side where I was in the 40s, is dark. Usually I take an E express train to 42nd and 8th. Not working. Had to take local trains back and forth. One hr each way for what is usually a 20 min ride,. and standing room only,. plus delays.

It is going to take a long time for things to improve. I feel most sorry for those who are still without power, and who suffered such great damage.
