I can see both sides of this and just have a few comments.

- I must admit, I would be curious of the results.

- If, in fact, it was denied Vlad... it shouldn't happen now, either.

- I personally don't see much harm. Think about it... what damage does it do every year across the country in every high school or jr highschool? At the pinnacle of their jealousy and potential immaturity at 17 years old, they tell all the kids to vote for a Prom King and Queen. They nominate several people who ultimately can't win. I don't recall hating the very people we voted for. We voted because we liked them in the first place. Same for homecoming. Even the goofy categories - class clown, most talkative, etc. were fun and we were the ones who picked them. If it was a cliq of 8 people who nominated themselves for everything, that'd be different.

I'm sure those opposed have reasons or bad experience with it. Maybe it's a statement on the makeup of the group, because honestly... the TT should be able to handle something like this.

I don't see a huge benefit to it or loss without it other than the intended fun. Do as you will. I'll be voting for myself in every category, anyway. That's how I roll.

I don't have a bad experience with it at all. I just think it's patronizing and aggrandizing.

If this were a competition of skill it would be different. But it's more like an evaluation of people and giving them a title or award based on how you see them, not how they are or how they feel they are. Its too presumptious. And given the nominations, you're not giving them a choice about what you call them. What if they don't want to be known as the funniest, smartest, or whatever?

This is about others superficially labeling you based on how they percieve you and placing you above others in that field. It is both incredibly kind and incredibly hurtful.

I'm simply saying to provide a forum to evaluate, grade, and vote on someone's personality, traits or values is patronizing.

Those things are here to be admired and learned from, not questioned or doubted through a vote amongst others. Making a vote or giving awards would be like dragging those people through the mud as if to settle a score or bet.

We're not here to be scored or betted on, even in jest. Doing it in jest actually makes it worse.

Although I don't object to this as strongly as Vlad does, I understand his concerns. Personally, I would not participate in such a thread because of the risk of causing people to feel excluded or reinforcing existing cliques, but I would also oppose closing the thread unless it became genuinely disruptive. It might turn out better than expected, but we shall have to see.

I'm not opposed to it being closed either, but since this seems to be in the hands of two or three people and it was so suddenly announced and we have no idea how much planning (or lack there of) was/is involved in this, we need to be cautiously optimistic that the responsibilities and humor factor can be balanced.

Nothing should be taken for granted or trivialized, especially through humor. As long as folks can remember that I don't have a problem with it either.

Oh, and before anyone thinks of calling me a hypocrite for having such a thread and then telling you it's not or may not be a good idea for you to have one, let me just make one critical thing perfectly clear:

That thread is/was primarily in regards to awarding skill and contributions of a tangible nature.

Therefore, it is NOT the same as this, which awards personality, physical appearance, humor, etc.

I'm thinking however that maybe the two can work together so as to cover more ground with less presumed events...at least the larger ones.

I don't know about that. I only found it because I knew had I the proof because it really happened. No one here was calling me a liar, but it seemed they would not believe me or take my word for it. That was a little upseting, since I'm definitely one of the most honest people you have here.

Ah, well. At the very least this gives me more credibility. Everyone could use more of that. 😀

Frankly, this whole thing is out of hand...I think the whole idea was not meant to be malicious, but I see and understand the concerns about it...

I will not be participating in it...why? Over the past few months, I've noticed that the same 5-10 people have hijacked pretty much every other thread...so I've almost stopped responding to everything, as I grew tired of having to rifle through conversations in order to get to the crux of the actual thread...and I have a feeling that this little popularity contest will be involving only those same people...

So, my thought is, just drop it...if the mods aren't fully supporting it, what's the point? And if the few people who are truly interested want to put this together on their own, off of the theater, then go for it...

But honestly, lets all calm down over this...it's not a constitutional ammendment...it was a concept on a tickling forum...let's all just let it go...

If you follow rational thinking to it's conclusion on this matter, you'll see it's better just admiring these individuals like you already do all the time every day.

These people don't need to be told they're such and such or the best this or that. This isn't the oscars and the people that would win aren't actors winning an award for entertaining or appeasing you.

You gave the proof which was indeed similar to this and it got closed, you provided the explanations and concerns which were all valid and for the most part, true and I will admit that you have thought this over a bit more than I have. Anyways, I agree with Camel. Let's just let this whole thing calm down and for the few people who want to participate in this, let them do it on their own time. That's all I wanted to say. I used up too much brain power for my long post so I can't think of anything more to say now. Sorry. =(

I should also clarify a statement I made earlier. When I said those opposed probably had bad experience with this, I meant they've seen it go badly somewhere else. Not that they were dissed or involved in the voting somehow and had their feelings hurt.

And I hope Camel's not talking about me. I try not to hijack much. I will say, though, that despite it all... something has come out of this thread. And that something is Journia's new song from page one. Thought it was worth repeating since this thread is about to die.
