I'm going to clarify my initial position here. I don't disagree with this idea so much for the excclusion/competition reasons. The reason I don't like this is much more simply because I think the "winners" would only be the most popular/outspoken people and/or the prettiest or flirtiest females.

Hungarian (my poor confused foreigner)...Prodigy was an online service (much like AOL) that had it's heyday back in the early to mid 90s. I remember when there were no chat rooms, no access to websites, etc. I remember before it was even a Windows application. DOS, anyone? It was glorious though. My first internet home back when I was a wee little nessie.
And how can you have been here this long without knowing what "my two centes" means? Basicaly it means "that's what I think" or "that's my humble opinion".

Hey all....I have just caught up with all your posts and I just wanted to say a few things.....

It's one thing to recognize members for their particular contributions...but to go as far as singling one person out as "the best" does create a rather uncomfortable atmosphere, I think.
That and something like this would, without fail, come up with simply the most "popular" member (ie whatever female is currently posting the most) on top.
I'm not gonna close it or anything of course. Do your thing. I just am not a fan of stuff like this.

Ness and Vlad I can understand what you are saying....it was a spare of the moment thing when I did post it,so didn't really think of the consequences and saw it as a bit of fun.Just wana say thanks though for not closing it immediately and I respect your opinions on it.

Although I don't object to this as strongly as Vlad does, I understand his concerns. Personally, I would not participate in such a thread because of the risk of causing people to feel excluded or reinforcing existing cliques, but I would also oppose closing the thread unless it became genuinely disruptive. It might turn out better than expected, but we shall have to see.

The last thing I want around here is for people to be excluded,coz I think that this site is great for making people feel welcome and I don't wana spoil that kinda atmosphere.

Frankly, this whole thing is out of hand...I think the whole idea was not meant to be malicious, but I see and understand the concerns about it...

Over the past few months, I've noticed that the same 5-10 people have hijacked pretty much every other thread...so I've almost stopped responding to everything, as I grew tired of having to rifle through conversations in order to get to the crux of the actual thread...and I have a feeling that this little popularity contest will be involving only those same people...

So, my thought is, just drop it...if the mods aren't fully supporting it, what's the point? And if the few people who are truly interested want to put this together on their own, off of the theater, then go for it...

But honestly, lets all calm down over this...it's not a constitutional ammendment...it was a concept on a tickling forum...let's all just let it go...

I'm guilty of hi-jacking threads and I can see how it would annoy you and other members too,so I'm sorry Camel (and to anyone else who finds it irritating) for being such a pain in the butt-I'll keep a closer eye on it in future coz I want you to keep posting and giving your 2 cents.


So what I'm trying to say overall is that I'm sorry I created the thread and it caused such a negative opinion for people.

So like Camel has suggested I'll just drop it and if people want to do one we can sort one out outside of the forum.

You don't post very often, and given your above explaination, which I fully agree with (thank you for saying and admitting this truth), I understand why you are so reluctant.

I've made attempts to stem the tide of these types of situations in the past, but I only get yelled out or scorned for it and any effort on my part goes unheeded and I get punished for stating the obvious.

You are completely right to say that the same people (some 4-7 people whom I could name right now but won't) have taken over. They have basically overrun general discussions (and to a lesser extent some other forums).

I have considered just giving up and letting this site's habit of getting knee-deep in spam and continuous ridiculous behavior and threads consume it.

But, seeing as how I'm a resident here, I have some ammount of responsibility in trying to make things better. Having no official power to do that anymore, I'm left with just advocating change. As a regular patron of the general discussions forum, I do not think it is an overstatement to say that we have a reasonable right to be able to come here and enjoy this site without having to wonder how far gone it is, what we have to rummage through to see a particular post, etc.

If anyone thinks what I've just said is out of line, then let me refer you to the last time we had this problem and that not only was I agreed with by the majority, but even lurkers came out to give their two cents.

This problem, though often times small and contained, is troublesome or gets on the nerves of the general population. They just don't say anything because they don't want to seem rude.

I think we may need to create some kind of courtesy system which only allows so many spam esque threads at a time.

People who would otherwise post and come out are not, largely because of this issue. They don't see it as worth their time, so they stay lurkers.

Exactly. Which means nominating several people for a category is a pity vote or can be, which is part of why this is a bit insulting or has the potential to be. The winner is most likely already decided and the others are only there for balance to make it appear as though everyone's being given the same opportunity and that the "victory" was not merely handed to the obvious winner.

But not everyone is given the same opportunity, because, as you say, the most outspoken people are the ones to be widely acknowledged for anything. Relatively reserved people, or those that are shy or have little to say will fall by the wayside as they are not a force on this site but may be just as deserving as the winner.

Quite unlike a competition of skill, where there is clearly something to judge and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, this about the essence of a person. And it's unfortunate that it is wholely decided by the volume of their activity.

Like I mentioned earlier I am guilty of hijacking threads...I don't do it deliberately and more often than not I don't realise I'm doing it.You could say that I get carried away with the moment coz the best thing about this thread is being able to chat and banter with like minded individuals who share the same interest-but I presume that there are limitations with regards to that and posts regarded as spam and a line has been crossed?

I'm not taking sides here, but I always saw the "hijackers" (not my word) as simply the next generation of regular-regulars (the previous generation being Ness, Vlad, HDS, Kalamos, Jaynin, etc).

I thought I was pretty clear. But since it seems your personal involvement in these matters is limited or does not predate them, I'll gladly clarify for you. 🙂

When I said "taking over the forum" I made it clear to announce it was the general discussions forum specifically. Furthermore to that, I meant more in terms of the quantity of spam threads, not actual thread hijacking.

To give credit to everyone, thread hijacking is down a fair percentage this quarter- a real improvement over last year's estimates.

People now generally seem less prone to hijacking a thread and it doesn't seem like a habit anymore but more like a choice. They only do so when the original point has been taxed or completed (which shows there is some consideration for the topic and the people pursuing it). Before they would hijack it completely at random even over something like a "lol" and others would give up and just let the spammers have it. Now its more contained than it ever was.

Unfortunately, this has caused a rise in the quantity and frequency of spam threads. Copycats follow the lead of the most popular of these threads and eventually you have a sub-community of folks either partly or completely dedicated to a kind of posting.

This would not be a problem at all if it was seperated from the bulk of the forum. Many have proposed the idea of a seperate "spam and banter" forum. Others have proposed that post counts are not awarded in this presumed forum as well, so as to maintain the integrity of legitimate post counts.

By giving people who wish to spam, roleplay or act silly a majority of the time a place to do just that, it allows this forum, the general discussions forum, to resume it's appointed role, free from the distractions and allure of the often more popular spam threads.

As for you doing anything wrong, I can't say that I have seen you do anything at all. So I have to withhold my judgement on that.

I have an idea of what the general consensus consider to be spam but if it is not a problem, may I inquire as to what you (and Ness, Val, mods) consider to be spam?

My idea for this would be to create a sticky containing some posting ground rules of sorts and have a section on spam... of course I could also be very ignorant if one such sticky exists already.

Anyways, my opinion of what it is doesn't matter. It's how the spam would affect a forum that is important, or would be important.

It is because of that realization and fact that previous actions had been taken and a silent majority gave their support. At least enough to involve the staff so as to consolidate a majority of the threads into a single topic.

Seeing now however that that method of reaction only has temporary benefits, it would be more ideal in the long run to create presumed spam forum.

I am more for that idea than to continue the way we are. It allows people to spam to their heart's content, while following some basic rules of conduct (which would be stickied as you suggest), and it allows people to get to know eachother better without having to comport themselves in ways they would be asked to or would automatically in the other forum sections.

To be fair, post counts would not be generated so as to maintain the legitimacy and worth of the post count process.

It has also been proposed that we eliminate post counts alltogether, and I would support that idea as well, since they have alot to do with why people spam and why it's a problem.

The only alternative, and the one that is not user-friendly, is to not allow spam altogether. No one ones to do that as no one is saying spam has no use or worth on it's own.

Not only that, but picking a title or award because of a specific person (like your anal rentive example) is a bit rude, as it assumes to place that kind of personality on someone as if that is an identifier.

While it may be true, making an award ceremony to say so is patronizing, as I've said earlier.

Ok, first of all, if this threads mere existence is gonna cause such an uproar, then it really would be best to let it die. I mean, based on what Helen's told me, it was never really meant to do anymore than give an idea, and see how it goes. There is no reason for people to get so worked up over and read so much into a simple idea. And yes, I am aware that there are certain individuals who are afraid that it could be harmful. But you do realize that by going against it so strongly, you are helping to bring that very same harm. And like I said, it was simply made to see what people think.

Second, as for the whole "spamming" thing, I always thought it was "to create many versions of the same thread" or something like that. But maybe my definition of spamming is different than yours Vlad. And if the mods decide to make another place for what is considered spamming, then by all means, go ahead. I for one could care less.

Is that really referring to the spamming, or is it to the fact that the older users are feeling "pushed out" by the newer users merely because they post more? I'm not trying to start anything, but at the same time, it needs to be clarified and worked out if it's gonna be made into such a fuss.

Be that as it may, the overlapping issues will have been involved sooner or later. This thread is substanticially ripe for that, considering.

Whether or not that will have been the case, more than not don't agree with this thread on it's principle. No one has actually said it should be closed, however, or that carrying out your idea anyway, regardless of what has been said, is an option you don't have.
