Marmite was first made in 1902 in Stafford in England from a distillation of pure deliciousness. Whereas, the antipodean pastiche known as Vegemite was invented in 1922, its taste being largely based on some old copper pipe that food technologist Dr. Cyril P. Callister found in a ditch and decided to start licking. He then formed a rudimentary paste by soaking the pipe in a pond for several weeks. It was, of course, repulsive, but he convinced people to buy it with some quasi-scientific marketing and a bright yellow label.
