But there is a misnomer about the Pilgrims landing in Massachusetts because they ran out of beer and wanted a cold one. Truth is, on long voyages, Ships Beer (and to a lesser extent, small beer) had antimicrobial properties (in the phenols, more so than the alcohol) while fresh water would become swampish and bacterial on a long sea voyage.
