Share your thoughts (cause I'm sure gonna share some of mine) Is this a triumph for Free Speech? Do these twisted nut-jobs make you ashamed to be fellow Homo Sapiens with them? How do they look themselves in the mirror every morning?

I've seen interviewers try to talk reasonably to one of their hate-filled ringleaders; it's impossible. Maybe she's insane, but you look in those eyes and see an empty pool of The Void looking back at you... this is one of those rarest occasions when I'll call a person Evil- (and even Evil has a right to free speech).........

The WBC is a cult, a hate group. The fact that they call themselves "Baptist" or a "church" is completely disgraceful. Christians don't like them, atheists don't like them, Jews don't like them... In fact, I think the only people who like them are the Phelps family, yet they insist on living their delusional lives, having offspring, and spreading their evil views onto their children. Anybody who has ever been to church a day in their life, regardless of their current religion or lack thereof, knows that true Christianity teaches that God loves, He does not hate.

The first amendment argument is old and tired. These monsters should have been punished swiftly and harshly. Free speech, my ass. What they do is malicious and ruthless. The first amendment argument doesn't hold water when you consider the fact that there are anti-bullying laws in place elsewhere. The Supreme Court, once the most trustworthy branch of the federal government, has thoroughly disappointed me today.

I hope I never see any WBC member in person. I'm afraid that if I do, I'll lose control, shoot them, and get on death row.

Just watched an interview where hackers hacked their website during the interview. I really think Shirley what's-her-face has a severe mental illness-

I know a very nice woman who suffers from PMDD (an extreme form of PMS; it's no joke, it's a real medical condition!) We're not talking about cramps and mood swings; it's so severe it actually turns this wonderful friend into a horrible MONSTER, impossible to reason with AT ALL till it passes (maybe lasts about a day) During those flare-ups there's no such thing as a rational conversation; she just attacks and attacks and belittles anything you say to her, and doesn't remember any of it the next day when the fit is over.

I'm absolutely dead serious, I say this with a straight face: this Phelps woman seems to have that terrible condition ALL THE TIME. I'm absoutely amazed she hasn't murdered someone yet. She's been doing these unspeakable things for years; picketing funerals, mocking and maligning the dead, bringing unwarranted misery to the bereaved in their time of grief;

I'm not getting to sleep any time soon tonight; watching an interview with her is like watching The Devil move and speak, more disturbing than any horror movie...

Hate Speech is constitutionally protected speech (in the U.S. at least, I'm told it isn't in Canada), and as long as their words do not present a clear and present danger, and as long as they take no violent actions, it will still be considered free speech. Freedom of speech means nothing if it doesn't also apply to speech you don't like.

They may be "new" to some people, but they've been picketing for years.

The gay community has been dealing with them for a long time. Way before they were doing the pickets of soldier funerals, they were picking the funerals of AIDS victims and Matthew Sheppard's funeral.

Because of free speach, you really can't stop them.

One of the successful things done against them is a counter protest by Angel Action.

Counter Protesters show up dressed as angels, with huge wings. They stand in front of the Westboro picketers, and block the view of others so the picketers and and their signs can't be seen.

The justice system can't do anything about it. However, you can get villified by people for saying it. You can be penalized by schools or clubs or the workplace where "Free Speech" is not an issue because they're not the federal gov't. And if you get lynched, well, that's people taking the law into their own hands, which is kind of illegal, too. But no, you can't go to jail just for saying those words.

They have the right to free speech- but they're disrupting funerals! I absolutely believe they have the right to proclaim their awful views, but there ARE some very minor limits to free speech.

Simple examples: you can't legally walk around preaching thru a megaphone after 10PM cause you'll violate a local noise ordinance. You can't hoot and holler in the back of a courtroom or you'll get escorted out (and possibly arrested) There IS a time and place to shut up, and a funeral is one of those time and places.
