Ha! I was JUST listening to that song AFTER I wrote "Randy Scouse Git"! Not the Monkees version, a garage band that put it out the same year. The band was called.....The WC Fields Memorial String Band. lol
It's just on a garage compilation I have, and it came up on my iTunes shuffle. So....that's what I am/was listening to as well!
I think their version came out before the Monkees' version (Paul Revere & The Raiders were the first to record it; the Monkees' version is definitely the most famous and definitive version.....nothing beats Mickey Dolenz' vocal performance!)
Great lyrics too:
"You're trying to make your mark in society
You're using all the tricks that you used on me
You're reading all them high-fashion magazines
The clothes you're wearing, girl, they're causing public scenes
I'm not your stepping stone!
When I first met you, girl, you didn't have no shoes
But, now you're walking around like you're front-page news
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But, you won't find my name in your book of "who's-who?
