What if everything we were taught, knew or thought that we knew about life turned out to be nothing but bullshit? I,ve been listening to REM, live from Weisbaden, Germany on DVD. In the song Maps and Legends, Michael Stipe sings:" Maybe these maps and legends have been misunderstood"

You mean, kind of like how when I was a kid, and I thought professional wrestling was nonfiction? :lol When I found out about its staged nature, I was shocked, then angry, but then I decided to try to pretend like I never found out (Makes it more fun if you pretend it's "real", aye?).

I would say that turned my whole world upside down, anyway.

"Some" turned out to be big bullshi!ts already and I'm glad to have known them at younger age to allocate for the contingencies. LOL.

It goes somewhat deeper and more serious than that, I mean the way in which we live, think, what we,ve learned from parents, teachers, professors, peers, literature, news, our ideology, ego, super-ego and philosophy, anything we consider important or a priority, morals, ethics etc., but you are on the right track.

When my preschool teacher said she was going to give us "lightsabers" instead of saying "lifesavers". My childhood dream of becoming a Jedi died that day (it was also the 1st time I had ever thought about killing someone as I envisioned my preschool classmates all dying horrid horrid deaths for laughing at me for getting excited about lightsabers...rotten little assholes).

I,ve never thought about killing anyone, but I was supposed to fight this creep that I couldn,t stand for 3yrs before a floor hockey game in grade 9.He didn,t show and I couldn,t wait any longer so I went and played. While I was kneeling down to put my equipment away two of his goon friends came in and put the boots to me,I got a couple of good shots in and the bell rang so they left. There was blood on the floor and I thought that I must be a mess.I went over to the sink to see how bad I had been beaten. All I had was a couple of scratches on my forehead and a bloody swollen lip. While I was washing my face the guy I was to fight went walking by and went into the last stall.I freaked and when I heard the toilet flush I crashed the door as hard as I could and left him there moaning.I thought I would be expelled but worse than that I thought my Dad would kill me.By the time I had taken my books from my locker I didn,t care. I figured that if I was to be kicked out that I would go in style.I walked into the classroom and a good friend,Isabelle, looked up at me and said "Joey! No!The teacher paid no attention,he was writing something on the board,so I walked up to one of these goons and punched him as hard as I could right in the face. The teacher turned and said:"Joey take your seat", the other guy sat right behind me and held a hankerchief up to his nose, that,s where the blood came from,as I walked by him I elbowed him in the nose again.I had just sat down when I heard my name being announced over the speaker and was told to report to the office.I got kicked out of that school because there were three of them and only me and the guy I crashed the stall door on had parents on the school board, but I was able to finish grade 9 at another school. My Dad wasn,t angry at all,he thought that I did the right thing by standing up to bullies.Sometimes bullies turn into wimps when you refuse to back down. They never bothered me again.Sorry for straying from the subject. Now let,s get back on track.

Funny thing about going to a public school is 90% of the stuff they feed you telling you that you will need trig, calc, or some other 'advance' class for college doesn't mean squat in the actual working place unless you're studying to be a rocket engineer.

I learned computer programming because they said I had the aptitude. I kept up with it and when I got my accounting degree, I was the only one in my class with actual computer experience (1978).

Haven't used most of the stuff I was taught in English in most of the business letters. Besides, Word does it for you. I have always loved history of any kind. It's a hobby. So, what did take to work that you learned in high school?

I'm still learning things my school would never dare teach us.

Medu Neter.

Much of what we are taught in schools is utter poppycock.

I tried to learn Medu Neter, the ancient Egyptian Heirogflyphic language, and I started out with E. A. Wallis Budge's translation.

He lied.

He was messing with the great language of Egypt and making people read it wrong so we don't truly know what it says.

Think of what else people did in History? What the bloody Hell are they not telling us?

Open the door, even if they say no.

It's all bullshit. But 95% of it is true.

Is this a weird generational thing? To me saying something is bullshit means you're saying it sucks. Ya know, like saying someone is an asshole means that they're a degenerate.

Its always been bullshit. Civilization has been around for at least 10,000 years, and nothing has really changed. We all still work for afew people's agenda's, we all rely on a point system to measure our worth, we all still think one religion is the only answer, and we all mess up the environment for the sake of greed. This is all we know as a culture so ya everything is pretty much bullshit imo.

I learned more things since I got out of school. I had books from my personal library that mostly contradicted what was in our history books. Math is math, it's not going to change the results. Same for english.

I keep up on the current news. Back in 1970, when I was still in Jr High, I belonged to a defacto club...shortwave listeners. We listened to most of the major stations. One day, we heard about a little town in Vietnam called Mei Li. The news was held for almost a week for the US media to play with it.

Ever since then, I don't believe most of what the Main Stream Media tells us.

We had nuclear power, flight, and the internet 10,000 years ago?

No but if you read my post you would see that we still follow a point system to measure worth, the majority still work for the minorities agenda, Religious rivalry, etc etc etc.

So you learn something new, does the world actually change from this revelation?

Not to say coming to a greater understanding about how the world works is a bad thing, but honestly its best just to accept your own worthlessness in the world.

Don't underestimate somebody's ability to affect changes in the world just because they're one person. Everything you do; everything everybody else does, influences the world in some way or another. Can you imagine how different the world would be if the chain of events that led to Isaac Newton to be bopped on the head by an apple didn't happen? That specific chain of events could have been so unimaginably trivial, and yet at the same time, they led to a complete shift in the way everyone on the planet thought.

Part of my above statement is relevant to this. People can grow, and change. It's all of a matter of how willing we are to help and teach people. The very fact that a person can talk of overcoming religion, and value systems shows that it's possible.

"Bullshit" is approximately equal to "lies", as best as I can define it at the moment. And asshole = jerk. :lol

Yes. Like I said, it's possibly generational. Go check out a ton of 80s movies. You'll hear these words used differently.

It's not a point up for debate. We used the words differently 25 years ago. Hell. We did twenty years ago, fifteen years ago. Somewhere in this fucked-up century things changed, so we did too. Doesn't matter too much. Things change.

But they did change, and the evidence is there. Watch "Ghostbusters" and "Back To The Future" (parts 1 and 2) to see evidence of the alternate usage of "asshole."

Watch most flicks from 1975 until the mid 1990s and you'll hear them say "what a bunch of bullshit" about things that are less than good. It could mean half-truths, it could mean that someone lost their job.

Yeah. Things change.

You mean the human side of things... The physical universe is already completely different from the way our 5 senses perceive it. Our bodies and brains are instruments for gathering food and surviving in this ecosystem, and we're not really designed for much else; at least we can use tools. Think how much more easily a machine (like a space probe) can perceive the full spectrum of light, radiation, radio waves, multiple dimensions, etc There's a whole spectrum of waves that human senses simply can't detect, and a whole bunch of simple concepts our brains simply can't imagine (like 4th-16th dimensions, or colors outside the visible spectrum)

Been listening to good podcast discussions about morals; why are atheists still moral people, for example? All our moral sense may just stem from survival instincts- we instinctively care for our children cause if we didn't the species would die out. We're loyal to family and tribe cause that gives us an advantage in the wild.

Oh, and our memories and consciousness aren't what they seem either.

Remember, we get taught conflicting things, too; one source says we evolved from apes, another says we share a common ancestor, and another says the first two views are blasphemy. Churches say it's wrong to have sex with multiple women, but society views you as a manly stud if you do; then they condemn you for it.... With all these contradictions, how can you say that ANYTHING we've been taught is true or false when we've been taught opposite things simultaneously?

Evolving from apes and a common ancestor are the same view. All life can be traced back to a single common ancestor, and all humans can be traced to a single, more recent ancestor where homo sapiens was differentiated enough from its forebears to be considered a different species.

This thread gives me a 1984 vibe, if anyone's read that book.

It is somewhat Orwellian but more like Animal Farm "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"

OMG be careful who you say that to; some people'll have FITS if you say "humans evolved from apes"- it's more correct to say we share a common ancestor, and it's better to say it that way to spare yourself some angry lectures.

I don't give a shit. I can so totally ignore the holy living fuck out of them.

Isn't that also a bit naive to think everyone can potentially have the same effect on the world as Isaac Newton, sure you can potentially change the world if you're a genius, or incredibly wealthy or hold a position of political power, but the vast majority of people are mediocre and forced to follow trends as they go, unltimately powerless to change outcomes that are ultimately decided by complex global forces that most cannot change.

And i'm not talking about forces of nature or some such shit like that, just the sheer omplexities of market fluctuations and fical policies are difficult enough to predict or swallow, especially when you see no possible way for the future to benefit you.
