Unless it uses the energy from a supernova, interstellar travel via solar sail is not very practical. However, using a focused energy beam on one focal point or riding the shockwave of an artificially created explosion (more akin to surfing than sailing) could, in theory, propel a spacecraft to a high percentage of the speed of light.
This technology may not be very far out of reach. By the end of this century, we may very well be sending small spacecraft to our nearest celestial neighbors.
