What Of Book Are You Read?

Here's an audio clip from the audiobook Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Its a scene where Ishmael the ape and his student are discussing the Creation Myth, which you and I know so well. Hope it works.

I hit a bandwidth limit and will have to wait to hear it. I did go to amazon.com and skim the first 22 pages. I think I have to get it. It starts slow, but I like the idea of an objective non-human observer re-examining human assumptions.
You mentioned "locking up food". That sounds like capitalism, which I like up to a point, but I will be interested in sustainable alternatives.

I may buy another book on re-examing beliefs:

"The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason"

Fiend, sounds good:
'The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies Of The Apocalypse' - Amazon.com: "Although substantially darker and edgier than the Hitchhiker's series, this gem will appeal to Douglas Adams fans, as well as lovers of British humor in general."

I finish "The Count of Monte Cristo" a few weeks ago, and now I'm reading "The Picture of Dorian Grey"

...and on a thoroughly non-hippie related note, I'm just reaching the end of 'The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies Of The Apocalypse' by Robert Rankin.

Robert Rankin is great!!!! Have you read Waiting For Godalming? Very random but very funny.

I am trying to do my dissertation at the moment so am multitasking by reading 4 books and a journal article at once all about the crusades and Saladin.

:nerd: My brain hurts!

Just finished "R Is For Ricochet" by Sue Grafton. I do the audio books during my commute since I have little 'sit down time' to read. Doing one now called "Don't Know Much About History: Everything You Need to Know About American History but Never Learned" by Kenneth C. Davis to see how much revisonist history has tainted the truth.

Sounds like I wouldn't like Ishmael, since it seems to dwell on the faulty science of evolution. AND BEFORE ANYONe STARTS A FLAME WAR AT ME, I have studied both creationism and evolution as a Christian AND and a man of science and can attest that evolution actually requires more faith to believe than creation does. My opinion, and any flaming posts won't change that, so just leave it there.

I also am reading "The 360 Degree Leader" by John Maxwell. Good stuff for anyone at any level of employment on how to lead up, down, or across work levels. I think it's a 'must read' for any professional...

Ohh good choices there 🙂

Dorian Gray is a reat book, I think you'll enjoy it a great deal.

Here's one for the Hollywood Brother...when you get a chance, pick up Harpo Speaks, lots of funny stuff in that book. You gotta read about How Harpo and Groucho's visit to a friend's Bachelor Party goes horribly, HORRIBLY wrong. 🙂

As for me, I am currently reading, A History of Pirates: Blood and Thunder on the High Seas.

Well, ISHMAEL has nothing to do with spirituality. More with evolution actually. If anything, its against spirituality in a way. It has nothing to do with auras or finding your spiritual self or any of that bullshit. I guess a pre-requisite for getting the most out of this book is that you believe in evolution. It won't get you to change the way you live, just get you to become more aware of how we as a society live. Actually, after reading the book, I was ready to move to a deserted island somewhere.

An sampling from the book: We are the only species that keeps its food under lock and key. There is food all over the world, and it grows everywhere and its free, yet we lock it up and have to work our asses off to get it back. Sounds pretty stupid to me. Another concept that stems from this idea is the way argiculture has shaped our society, and not in a good way. Concepts like these are brought up in the book and when you are done reading it, I'm sure you will see that the way we live is preposterous.

well i know the book doesnt have to do with aura's and things like that.. i was just saying it kinda goes hand it hand.. it has to do with a higher level of thinking and understanding.. the only thing i know about ishmael is theres a guy and a talking gorilla.. i hope you didnt take what i said offensively, as it was not intended that way.. and trust me man.. i dont need a book to see that the way we live is preposterous.. been well aware of that

Oh, I didn't take offense or anyhting. I just thought maybe you had a misconception of what it was about, that's all.

If anyone is interested in a suspense/thriller/murder mystery book, I recommend "The Alienist" or "Heart of Darkness" (Sequel to The Alienist) by Caleb Carr. The Alienist was the book that got me back into reading.

Just finished "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. That was a fantastic book - I'm going to make a point of getting the film, next.

At the moment I'm reading "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath.

At the moment, I'm rereading "The Book of Lost Tales" parts 1 and 2 by J.R.R. Tolkien. Actually, it's a collection of his original writings about Middle-earth, edited together with commentary by Christopher Tolkien, his son. It's a pretty interesting read if you want to know how the mythos originated.

I am currently reading Ben Pimlotts biography of the late Harold wilson (Lord) - british prime minister in the 60s and 70s...amazingly its really interesting...can't put it down...could be along haul as its got over 800 pages...billy no-mates time!

OMG! so hooked on the Battletech novels. just got finished with Storms of Fate and Endgame, currently reading Operation Audacity. totally hooked on the Fed Com Civil war story, WOOT! go Victor! also love the Mechwarrior games for PC and XBOX.

Big Norm did you ever play the tabletop BattleTech games?

It's with miniatures and you play out of books sort of liek dungeons and dragons i guess, but it's more game piece based and you just use the books for stats, and basically each player builds an army of mechs and goes to war

oh kick ass, i gotta get that, i'm a big Mechwarrior fan, and soon enough, i'm gonna get Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries (my old disc got scratched) and Mechwarrior 4: Black Knight

yeah, there were a couple games, one was actually called battletech, where you bought minis and assembled and painted them, and now i think they have actual official mechwarrior minis, you just buy boosters with random figs and build armies

both, very cool. and it's fun to design tables and stuff to play on
