Heh.
I include Ed here, on the assumption that Ed is in fact a girl. While they did sort of say Ed was in Cowboy Bebop, there is some ambiguity.
Theres no ambiguity to it. Ed IS a girl. This is completely factual and is professed by the character herself, others, the original concept artist, the director, the creator, and the two voice actresses respectfully (as well as costars and staff in interviews). And just to make it 100% clear, its official in her biography that her sex is listed as "female".
Alot of people wanted Ed to be a boy so bad they believed it regardless of the early clues that she wasn't, and some still argue dispite these facts straight from the creator's mouth.
Ed was originally created to be a boy, but was made into a girl last minute for character balance. I think that was not only a smart move but I think she's more believable as a girl. Any boy can be like her, but not all girls her age. She's one of those typical character styles who is almost androgynous, lacking compete qualities of either sex which put them somewhere in the middle. Although she IS a female, and so isn't androgynous in that sense.
Ironically, I think its more Ed's character which causes the confusion rather than her appearance. Her mannerisms are willowly and feminine, but her likes and dislikes are tomboyish in nature.
I think theres clear instances in the series where she acts completely like a girl and sometimes completely like a boy. Its the charm of her character, made more wholesome by her innocent age of 14. ^^
How did Jet put it in one episode? "Theres nothing more pure and cruel than a child."
Of course he wasn't refering to Edward. ^__^
