Not to worry, he says he WILL be completing the Dark Tower myth. And I believe him. That storyline and those characters comprise the most personal exploration into psychedelia he's ever done. It's gotta be almost like therapy for him to write those. And he knows his core fanbase will be forever disappointed if the tale has no end.
I read that same article on Yahoo. He gave an interview with the LA Times, and that's where he said "I'm done." He stated he had about 5 more books coming out over the next few years, and he reassured that he would finish the Dark Tower books.
The realization that he has to quit came when he finished "Buick 8." He regarded the completed story, and noticed, uh, gee, I've done this before. Haunted car. Hmm. I think the fans are going to notice. Uh, maybe I'm done.
He mentioned starting to recycle old ideas and how it's getting him down. He wants to go out while he's still on top.
It's funny, Calliope, you're the second person to tell me in the past couple of weeks that Insomnia ain't so bad. I like hearing people praise Stephen King books, especially the ones I'm not into. (And there aren't many I'm not into -- Insomnia, Needful Things, Desperation/Regulators, Tommyknockers. I think that's it. Back around the time of It, I thought Firestarter was his weakest, but now I'd re-read that one before any of the aforementioned.)
Anyway, being the eternal optimist, now I'm in the mood to give Insomnia another chance. The best part of that book for me was those few pages in the airplane at the end when the story overlaps into the Dark Tower dimension. Can't say how much I LOVE that stuff. That part, and crashing a plane into Connie Chung.
But I still have to read Black House, believe it or not!
And how about that Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, or whatever her name is? Anyone read it? I've got the miniseries on tape here at work, and I'm going to watch it this week, but I'm wondering if there's any difference between the "diary" and the miniseries. Anyone?
