Why do some people hide while online?

Have you ever looked at the bottom of the page and see all the people who are online? It'll list the total and beside that how many are members and how many are guests. And below that are the members who are on, but not all of the members are always shown. Like say there were 12 people on (9 members, 3 guests) but you see only 6 members' names.

So I'm curious why do you hide when you're online? Are you avoiding certain people? Or what?

Because I don't like being that accessible to people. My real life is the same as my online life. Sometimes ya just want to be left the hell alone and some people can't respect that. Those in my inner circle know how to reach me, or know someone who does in case of emergency but if they're sincerely on fire, I hope they'll call 911 first. 😀

I just think some people, mostly women, might not want to get bothered with PMs everytime they are online. as for me, i look forward to PMs from the ladies. not that i get any i might add.

Some people are just that shy. Either in real life or online, it doesn't matter. They just want to poke around without having to worry about PMs in their inbox, I suppose. *Shrugs*

Sometimes I tend to hide my status on a message forum, if someone has been bugging me and I don't feel like dealing with them.

Well, stories are hardly embarrassing. But you did remind me of one time, I found a friend online and viewed his profile, and it showed he'd been on a "STOP tickling me, I have to PEE!" clip for the last half hour. Not that there's anything wrong with that... but I still thought it was funny.

I utilize the invisible mode here....and at every forum where I'm a member (even those re: weather and science).
In the strange and sometimes dangerous times in which we live.....it pays to maintain a low profile. I even turned off the "online" light on my Myspace profile (which lets others know when I'm logged into Myspace).

The internet isn't real life.....so I feel no obligation to let folks I'm not personal aquaintances with know where I am 24/7. Sorry if that upset anyone....but as long as invisible mode is avaiable at TMF, I plan to utilize it.

Those who I trust and truly wish to know where I am all have my cellphone number (including two of my trusted Myspace friends); they can reach me 24/7 in case of emergency.

Maybe some people are intimidated because the regulars are so friendly with eachother that they feel intrusive.
