Why you can't tickle yourself, and why we are all ticklish?

Judging from the comments made here I think it's a given that especially sensitive people might be able to make themselves laugh. However no-one can generate the same level of response that a seperate tickler would be able to. Schizophrenics however, have no such problem according to the scientific study I read about. Of course the accuracy of such a study is always open for individual people to question, so at the end of the day it's just another point of view.

this schizophrenics thing has me thinking

and you know how much that hurts!
ok, by this term jim i'm guesing that you are refering to multiple personality types, right? in nursing school, and in hospitals i've worked in, it was taught to us that only one personality can be overt at one time. so if personality "a" were to tickle personality "b", the person wouldn't laugh out loud, "b" would be laughing on the inside! all you'd see is a person fondling them self.
does this help?

OK, time for my two cents.

#1. Not everyone is ticklish. Darn it all!

#2. There are people who can tickle themselves...me being one of them. I suspect that the study Jim is refering to was entered into with a psych angle in mind. So, naturally, they'd come up with psych related conclusions. I've seen several studies claiming that it can't be done. I KNOW it can be.

My conclusion to the descrepancy? People find what they want to find. It's been done since the beginning of the scientific method. How else would you explain there being so many studies on the same topics, using the same parameters where the results are totally opposed? A scientist/researcher decides what they expect to find (esp. when there may be a psych angle involved) and reads the info. they get accordding to that presupposition.

Good point Steve, as there is someone here who knows a bit about the condition I should add that the people were in altered states of consciousness at the time. Not exactly hypnotised to the full, but taken under enough so that two personalities, although though not both fully active, could respond emotionally. I think the technique used was that the left half of the body was one, and the other half was another. When someone tried to tickles the left side of their ribs with their right hand, it tickled as much as if a second party was doing it.

now that would be cool to witness

hypnosis is such an amazing tool. it must have been freaky, and intriguing to see that session.

I guess it would have been.LOL Of course you can hypnotise someone to THINK they can tickle themselves, but when they laugh it's not strictly speaking because it tickles. It's because they THINK it tickles. To a certain degree I suppose it's acting. As far as I can tell, these people were actually feeling it themselves, not just acting. Just how the doctors could tell that is not known I guess.LOL

Jim...I'd be interested in seeing the study you're refering to. If you have or can dig up a link to it, I'd like to read it.

From what you've said, it almost sounds like they used EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Resolution), which uses the left right brain signals. Though it isn't hypnosis and doesn't mean that there's another personality, it can often show one when it's present. EMDR is used most often in trauma cases and for PTSD patients. It's a type of regression therapy. If that's what was used in this study, rather than pointing to another personality, it could point to another time in the persons life when they were more or less ticklish. Of course, as usual with psych studies, they are very subjective and often in conflict with studies using the same parameters.

Interesting thread!
