Words & phrases that should be removed from our vocabulary

I know that I recently wrote a thread about labels. Well some labels are good and some are just plain mean and nasty. The words that I think should be removed from our vocabulary are in no particular order:

Bastard - Why should there be a label for a child born of an unwed couple? I think it's mean and unnecessary.

Illegitimate child - Better than bastard but why have it? Why have labels that distinguish a child born of wed people from a child born of unwed people? Just curious about that.

Child born out of wedlock - Look up at bastard. Feel about it the same way.

Love child - Not crazy about this phrase either.

I mean calling children these names are like labeling for something they have no control over and it's mean and nasty. To me a child is a child to me, it doesn't matter whether their parents are married or not.

Just wondering people's thoughts on this.

I think Nihilist and narcissist should be removed since just about everybody has these traits nowadays, rendering said terms all but obsolete.

The funny thing about "bastard" is, it is rarely used in the accurate context. As for the rest, I dunno. I don't see a problem with using them, if the specific information conveyed by them is relevant. Like any other label, they should be used when it is necessary and appropriate to include the specific information they were coined to provide, not as insults. Personally, I feel like dropping the terms would support the notion that there's something wrong with a person, for being any of them. I think it would be more productive if we could agree to not use them with a negative connotation.

Of course, a the same time, I can't really see when there would be a need to point out that a child was born out of wedlock. So you may have a point, there, after all.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. While I may not like certain words, I feel purposefully eliminating words is a form of censorship. And censorship doesn't sit well with me at all.

Words have been phased out and have disappeared altogether from the language over the centuries for lack of use and such. But to force them to be removed is just plain wrong.

If there is a word that I don't like, I simply don't use it. If someone else uses it, I just ignore it. But don't worry. The PC nazis are being allowed free reign to reshape the language so I'm sure you'll be happy when they take those words and many other away from you by force.

Well Slacker all I am trying to say is that unfortunately on the news sometimes the newscaster will say something like this celebrity's illigitimate child that was born from them having an affair with someone wants money or something like that is nasty. I mean why should their be a distinction between a child that born of wed people than that of a child born of people unwed? I don't think it has anything to do with censorship, it's just unnessary to label people like that. I mean the word nigger is probably still in the dictionary and I don't like that work at all. Also the word chink that's derrogitory to an Asian is probably still in the dictionary and that's a nasty word either.

As for the words you highlighted, well, im a bastard, I actually quite like that the word is used, means when people try to offend me by calling me such I can simply and happily agree with them and carry on with my day, so it depends how ya look at it.

I completely agree. Adding words because of a current and fleeting trend is abhorrent. Using them? Fine. But when they make those announcements on NPR and such about stupid slang words actually being added to the lexicon of the English language, I just want to puke. How many that were so popular that they were added in the 80's are still in use?

Maybe it's simply because I revere the English language that I hate to see it denigrated so. I do fear, however, that with the widespread use of the internet and the growing trend of lazy typing and the shortening of every possible word imaginable, that our language will be unrecognizeable in twenty to forty years.

And for what it's worth, Hari...I'm with ya. From one proud bastard to another.

Bastard seems to be one of my favorite words, I use it all the time
when jokingly slamming someone (That bastard!) and I also use

I am sorry you take it that way Slacker because even though yes, it's a form of censorship that I want to get rid of these words from our vocabulary, I think that it's one of the most insulting things to label someone in a nasty way because they were born of parents not wed. I am only talking about a few words and phrases. It's okay to use the word bastard in a joking sense but my problem with it, is that one of the meanings of the word as LeeAllure pointed out is that it means someone born of unwed parents.

I know in this country that we really value our freedom and with that freedom unfortunately comes with the fact that we can insult people and make them feel like crap for whatever reason. I just think insulting someone because they were born of two people not wed is one of the worst things that you can do to someone because people have absolutely no control over the circumstances in which they are born. So, I respect that if there's a word you don't like then you don't use it but unfortunately not everyone feels this way.

Censorship is wrong, and it reeks of fascism. Just like busting these kids out there who get caught with a couple joints and get three months in JuVe. That's an obstruction of justice, just like censorship. Just like movies that get censored and edited so that people of all ages can watch them. I'm sorry but an R rated movie is not for everyone, and that is why we have ratings because not everyone can watch mature content. Although I was pissed to see eight year olds with their parents at the Saw V premire.

Anyway, this is America, and people have a right to speak their minds. The voice of descent will always be available to the American people, as it should be. And let me ask you how we should take out those words, Jen? Should we brainwash every person on the planet and block those words out of their heads, or just erase our minds completely so we can never say the words again?

I have three thoughts on this:
1) Being born out of wed lock is no longer the taboo it once was. Its been a while sense I have heard on the news "The little bastard weight 8 lbs. 7oz.."

2) When I hear someone being called a bastard my first thought isn't "wow, his parents were not married when he was born."

3) Maybe the most important point is there are far worse names and labels out there.
