Favorite video game villains?

Y'know, forums typically use a thing called *SPOILERS* for this kinda giving away of certain plot elements. Just thought I'd mention it. :p

Heh, come on, the final battle was more disgusting than terrifying. I think at that point he becomes more of a huge, impersonal monster thing than a real villain anyway.

Well that may be how you saw it, but for me it was one of the most climactic final battles in any game ever. Especially the beginning of the fight where Gannondorf transformed and the boss name came up, not with a subtitle like all the others, but just "Ganon", because anyone that played Zelda before knew what he was. This was the being from the past 2d Zeldas in 3D, and I'd say he was pretty intimidating. He was still Gannondorf, except he was exerting all of his power because he was consumed with hate and rage for the fact that he was actually defeated, even after all that happened. That final battle was nothing short of pure awesome imo.

Moebius, the time streamer from the Legacy of Kain series---this guy would screw with you in the past, the present, the future, and even alternate dimensions.

D'OH! How could I forget him?! Yes, the LoK series had some of the most amazing story-telling and characterization I've ever seen in a game. Definately one of the most underrated series ever.

Boss

Mine would be The Boss form MGS 3:Snake eater.

very compassionate, but battle hardened and incredibily experienced (kicked Snakes ass atleast four times) respected by her freakish comrades and feared by everyone, including Volgen, in the game. One helluva boss fight to.

I haven't been into my videogames for a while now so I'm struggling to see past the plethora of thoroughly horrible and wonderfully villainous villains that constituted the Metal Gear Solid series. I'd go for:

10 - Patchwerk, World of Warcraft. As bossfights in WoW go there are more atmospheric, more cerebral and generally tougher encounters to be found, but a bossfight that allows DPS warriors to let go of all the aggro-pulling fears and just swing away are few and far between. Patchwerk is probably the best one I can think of.

9 - Vulcan Raven, Metal Gear Solid. Aside from being a big muscly Vulcan cannon-toting native American nutter, he is actually one of the more likeable characters in the series. Again he isn't the toughest boss in the game and his encounters are hardly the most testing, but the character itself strikes a chord with me, especially his death scene which I found incredibly cool.

8 - Eliphas the Inheritor, Dawn of War Dark Crusade. It's a shame this bloke's armies are so poor because he is without doubt the best character in the game.

7 - The Meat King, Hitman: Contracts. The Meat King's Party is by far the creepiest mission in Contracts and is probably my second-favourite mission in the series, aside from the Kirov Park Meeting in Silent Assassin. It's not particularly difficult to obtain a Silent Assassin ranking on (I think I did it in four and a half minutes on one occasion) but it's just so dark, dingy, and horribly atmospheric.

6 - The End, Metal Gear Solid. What a bossfight this is. It's supposed to be a sniper battle and to be honest doing it that way is probably easier than the "run about the place looking for tracks" method I chose to employ, since you can be standing 5 feet from this silly old fart and not see him because of his camouflage. An ambitiously designed and wonderfully immersive bossfight, one of the best in the series.

5 - Albert Wesker, Resident Evil. Old Snake-Eyes isn't the toughest or the coolest or even a great speaker, but THE SHADES, man!

4 - The Sorrow, Metal Gear Solid. Be honest, how many Game Overs did you get before you clocked the trick in this bossfight? Freakish, bizarre and a brilliant twist, except if you've spent the majority of the game killing people.

3 - Turel, Legacy of Kain - Defiance. "No, no more talk... no more words... time to run... time to scream... time... to die!" The Legacy of Kain series is one of my all-time favourite game franchises; the writing is excellent, the plots are excellent, the characters are excellent and everything about the game and the universe in which it's set is just fantastic. There are loads of brilliant bossfights (Nupraptor, Dejoule and Bane, Kain himself) in the series but Turel gets the mention because he is a giant mutated bat creature with some unspeakably cool lines.

2 - Onikage, Tenchu. I'm a big fan of the Tenchu series, it being packed with wonderfully cheesy characters and bossfights and ninja nonsense, and you can't be a fan of Tenchu without being a fan of Onikage. "I love it... I love it... I LOVE IT!!!!"

1 - Mister 47, the Hitman series. Okay he isn't techincally a villain, but a baldy clone with a barcode tattoo and a penchant for killing folk for money can hardly be considered a hero. He's one of my favourite videogame characters of all time, easily the coolest player character yet devised. All he needs are shades a-la Mr 17 and he's all set.

From my childhood, I had an old TI-99/4A computer, and my sister's favorite game, which used to scare the heck outta me (In retrospect, I have no idea why, but I used to also be scared of the walking food monsters in Burger Time.), was Hunt the Wumpus. If you tried to shoot the wumpus and missed, or stepped into the grid square that the wumpus was hiding in, you'd be treated to a short cinema sequence of the wumpus' jaws closing on you, while the death march played. In 1983, it was pretty cool.

Coming forward in time to some more CURRENT events...

Between Kefka and Sephiroth, I have to say Kefka was my favorite villain, because I never actually finished FFVII (Gasp! Yeah, I had a few incidents where my memory card got erased midway through the game and I got too pissed off to continue. I've seen the ending, though.). Sephiroth may have killed someone VERY important, but Kefka was more amusing through his twisted evil desires. He just LOVED being evil.

Backtracking a little, I remember playing an old Dungeons & Dragons Dragonlance computer game called Death Knights of Krynn. Lord Soth had to be the most frustrating fight in that game. He was a badass in the books, and he was a pain in the ass to fight. He had about 5 other death knights with him, as well as about 8 iron golems. If I didn't win initiative, the whole beginning of the fight involved all the death knights casting delayed blast fireball, pretty much nuking my entire party, and then if I'm lucky my wizard and fighter/Solamnic knight would survive long enough to strike back.

Coming all the way forward to 2006-2007, in Gears of War, there was the two Berzerker fights, which weren't overly difficult, but required precision and care when fighting a rampaging giant. Don't let me forget the final boss fight against General Raam. It was frustrating with all the Kryl(bats) surrounding him, trying to stay in a lit area so you don't get killed, and manage to nuke him with that atomic crossbow enough times to kill him. GirlsDoItToo and I stayed up til about 6am trying to kill that bastard. A lot of the enemies in Gears of War just made me feel bad for the human race in general in that game. It all seems so hopeless for them.

Going back to the 90s again, I'll say Lavos from Chrono Trigger. A world-consuming parasite that stewed throughout billions of years before taking out civilization is pretty badass.

Then there was Deus from Xenogears. I mean, if I remember correctly, weren't you pretty much fighting a god?

I could keep going, but I can't prioritize them, and my post has got no cohesive order to it. :D

One of my personal favorites is the very evil Yuber, a recurring villain from the Suikoden series. A mysterious non-human (with a human appearance) that lives for chaos and destruction.

Kefka hands down. He is such a bad ass he makes Sephiroth look like a momma's boy!

Carnage from the spiderman games

Nemesis from The Resident evil games.

OMG, how did I manage to not reply to this one?

I was expecting a load of Final Fantasy baddies in this thread... is it just me that finds them all horribly contrived and boring? They're all EXACTLY THE SAME CHARACTER!

Sure, the first freakin post knocks off Kefka and Psycho Mantis.

I'll throw out 10 no one's mentioned

Evil Queen - Battletoads
Kun Lan - Killer 7
i-no - Guilty Gear XX
Midnight Thunder Boy - Viewtiful Joe
Dracula - Symphony of the Night (had to have one Castlevania, right?)
Colossus 16 - Shadow of the Collosus
That dick at the end of Bubble Bobble with the killer music...yeah
Devil Hand - God Hand (Tiger Joe if this included henchmen)
Joe Chin - Parappa the Rapper
Freebird - Guitar Hero II (c'mon, this song is a bloodthirsty villain)

Great reiterations:

This song starts out deceptively easy, too! It doesn't reveal how much of a pain it is until the later solos! :wow:
