I Must Really be Growing Up

A mate turned 21 today. This is a cause for celebration; it's usually a cause for much celebration, and many bad decisions. Today, however that was not the case. A mate turned 21 today, and rather than getting all the boys together and drinking obscene amounts of alcohol and getting ourselves properly mullered, we just met up for lunch and had a chat about college, and our plans for the summer, and after college, and all of those funny little eventualities that usually would be pushed by the wayside when celebrating a mate’s birthday.

Today, however, we didn’t go out on the piss. We didn’t drink questionable amounts of alcohol; we didn’t even burst into a drunken rendition of ‘American Pie’… a time honoured tradition on one’s birthday, we didn’t even do anything particularly foolhardy. It’s funny, really. It was just like any other day. When we’d had lunch, we all went our separate ways, and I went to training, and didn’t even think about rallying the lads for a night on the lock.

Right, that’s it, I’m getting old and boring… next thing is, I’ll have a steady job and wear a tie... well, that’s hardly fair, I do look good in a suit. Maybe it’s not all bad.

Yeah, sounds like your friends were being annoying, but I can see stuff like that happening at a crowded event. People get separated, they find something interesting, they forget about responding to the other people. Frustrating, but I'm sure no one was intentionally trying to give you the message that they hated you or didn't want to be friends or didn't care or anything like that.

Texting. BAM!

And the last part you wrote about is right, but the thing about adolescence, being a teenager, growing up, being a half kid/half adult is that every emotion feels 10 times more intense than it really is and you put too much value on how you feel. It's all very self-absorbing, but I think everyone experiences it.

It's true that there are much more "adult" things in the world to worry about, but the fact remains that you ARE still a kid whether you can vote or not, and so to have these kinds of incidents and the feelings that you have is totally typical. I'm 23 and I still encounter stuff like this with some of my friends who refuse to grow up. I have friends in their 30s who do, too.

Enjoy yourself and don't worry about growing up too quickly. Like Mai said, every goes through the half kid/half adult thing. Don't sweat it, babe :bubbleheart:

That must have been an enlightening meeting you had with Slacker and Stacy. This is the most mature, thoughtful blog entry I've seen from you so far Aimee.

I think you are starting to realize it, and you will see more on more as the years pass on, that you have just barely begun to experience life. It's wise not to dwell too much on the past, especially when people or things from the past seem silly and childish.

If "friends" want to be shallow and cause drama for the sake of having it in their lives, these are friends you can do without. Maybe they'll grow up and you become closer again with them later, but I have little patience, and you should too, for people that do this kind of stuff. Always remember that you deserve to be treated with love and respect by those close to you and don't settle for less.

your experiences that day feel almost familiar.
I feel that everyone goes through this phase near the end of high school, friends who you grew up with and spent much of your younger years with never actually growing up. while you develop character and begin making more fulfilling choices, they choose to live for the drama, because that's all they think they know.
One of my closest friends from high school just recently eloped to vegas and married a guy she had been dating for six months, meeting him two months after a terrible two year relationship. While two of my other best friends have found a steady place in their life and is now raising a family.
Some people grow up, while other just...don't.
Amy you're a great person, you can do without these people who are just trying to cause grief in your life.
