I read a story about a serial killer the other day. The killer suffered from a delusion. He believed that, given the opportunity, he could drive the circumference of the world in a single day.
The killer would steal a car and drive along with the sun, east to west, in an attempt to achieve his goal. Obviously, this was futile because the car would stop. Either the car would wear out and break down or it would run out of gas; whatever. The killer continuously found himself on the roadside, defeated.
To continue his journey, the killer would flag down an oncoming car, kill the driver and whoever else was in the car, remove whatever was inside that was not of immediate use to him, discard the bodies, reset his clock and start again, trying to circumnavigate the world in 24 hours.
The killer was eventually caught and, when interviewed about his crimes, said that his failures were the result of the cars breaking down or running out of fuel. No matter how often he tried or what the circumstances were, it was always something to do with the car that kept him from his goals.
It never occured to him that his goal was impossible.
I respect that.
