Texas is so big and diverse, that is a tough question. There are counties in West Texas bigger then some of the New England states but only a few thousand people live in them. In the Rio Grand Valley, it's more like living in Mexico then America. East Texas is in many ways more of an old Southern state like Alabama or Georgia back in the bad old days, but that is slowly changing.
I live in Austin, our state capital. It's gotten much too big for my tastes, we will have 1 million people living here within 10 years or so. I do enjoy the ethnic and cultural diversity though. And while the summers can be very hot I do enjoy our warmer winters. I grew up in Kansas, and I hate cold weather and snow.
When I moved from Kansas to Houston in 1980, I felt like I had been born in the wrong place. It's hard to explain. Many things about Texas make me mad, frustrate me, and sometimes make me ashamed, but this is where my heart and soul are. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
