End of the world? Age of Enlightenment, or age of Darkness? Our first Alien contact???

What do you think will happen on the last day of the Mayan calendar????

(I'm hoping for a great awakening, but I suspect it'll be something invisible to the news and leaders)

It'll be December 21st, 2012: the sun will rise, possibly hidden behind clouds or obvious to see, then it will set and the moon will come up. Then it will move from 11:59PM, 12/12/21 to 12:00AM, 12/12/22.

And... that's it. :stickout

I'd love to think it was first contact with aliens or something exciting like that (no destruction though), but to be honest I'll be surprised if anything world-shakingly unusual does happen. I'd rather the date be further off so we could enjoy the mystery of just not knowing a little longer. 😛

I know EXACTLY what will happen on this so prophesied day. On December 21st, 2012, the Sun, the Earth, and the center of our galaxy will come into a perfect alignment...... just like every other December 21st. :lol

Actually, only aligns with the center of the galaxy once every 28,000 years or so

Elvis will play a surprise gig at Madison Square Garden.

"THE GREAT CONJUNCTION IS THE END OF THE WORLD! Or the beginning..." (Aughra, The Dark Crystal)

We'll see, won't we?

makes the most sense so far.....

december 21st? Surely having a big great fight agaisnt everyone for get the "ultimate edition (insert-cool-videogame-name-here)" for that christmas. (Diablo3, for example, I don't trust blizzard's rumors)

Maybe all the 2012 people will kill themselfs...

then people will pick another date to be wrong about.

Here's what I think will happen:

Nothing. It'll be just like any other day we've all had before. No enormous explosions (ala Michael Bay), no massive plague, no random meteorite hitting the planet, nothing.

So my opinion on the end of the world can be summed up in one single comic, shown here.

I thought the Great Conjunction happened over 10 years ago??? All the planets lined up and it didn't do squat (unless........we haven't felt the effects yet...)

So if an "Awakening" happens, what do you hope it will be?

Wrong. It's been happening every winter solstice for the past 2000 years or so. Where did you get such a number as 28,000?

Edit: After 3 seconds of "research" I think I figured out your problem. Google likes to spit the numbers 25,000 - 28,000 light years as the distance between the Earth and the center of our galaxy.

Now, our star orbits the galactic center at ROUGHLY 140 - 150 miles per second - it varies a bit. Factor in the distance and you can gauge a "galactic year" which is one trip around the galactic center. That is about 225 - 250 million years. Our planet orbits the sun once every year. That's common knowledge. Now if you think about the oversimplified idea of a pea spinning around a tennis ball, which is slowly spinning around a basketball - they are going to align quite often.

It was just a quote... On second thought I may have left the first part away and just left it at "THE END OF THE WORLD! Or the beginning..." but it's part of her line and I love that one. Hm. I guess there's always two ways to look at something. 😉 As for whatever will happen in 2012... we'll just have to wait and see. That's how it works with all the future.

I love you man XD

ARE....YOU...A....GELF...LING?!

😀

I honestly don't know, although considering how the Mayans have been known to be in contact with extraterestrials (even one of their kings was said to be one) if something really does happen, it could be the day THEY came home.

For the sake of making my best friends pay up in the face of total disaster (just to see their faces when they admit they were wrong), I've placed money on the following bets:

The dead start rising as zombies and society breaks down as the living must now fight off the dead.

A well-aimed solar flare crispifies alot of the earth and Earth is reduced to a wasteland with humanity eking out a living in the irradiated wastes.

A bio-weapons manufacturing facility makes a critical mistake and releases a bio-weapon which eventually reduces the Earth's population from twelve billion to twelve million in a matter of a few months.

A nuclear launch platform satellite dating back to the cold war suffers a critical systems failure and launches it's ICBM"s sparking WWIII (and thus resulting in global nuclear/biological weapons armageddon)

We get a visit from the galactic community in the milky way and they tell us galactic society wants us to do the following in order to ship up and fly right (aka behave as a race). If we refuse (which we'll naturally do), all humans (but not anything else in the Earth) gets a one-way ticket to oblivion.

Yeah, I probably read to much science fiction. ^_~

12 billion? :lol 6 billion.

We get wracked by "well-aimed" solar flares frequently. Solar flares play a large role in influencing the space weather of the earth. 😉 I'd be more worried about one of these bad boys.

All GRBs we have witnessed happen in far-off galaxies, so we're safe from their radiation. You need a special kind of telescope to detect these. However, if one were to happen relatively close, and it was aimed at us, we wouldn't be able to tell it was coming until it actually hit us; because GRBs move at the speed of light. GRBs are extremely energetic bursts of electromagnetic radiation.

It would cause light scattering in our atmosphere similar to the sun. In laymen's terms, you would see "two suns" in the sky; and then promptly go blind from the nearly-immeasurable radiance of it. Then it would burn off our ozone layer. THEN it would be a horribly irradiated wasteland, in which most people are dead. 😉

I'm using "crispifies" every chance I get in conversations from now on. :wlaugh

Damn, and I was feeling so depressed. Thank you for the uplifting factoids! 😀

Seriously, that's fascinating, if a little bit frightening (let's see, where did I put those fallout shelter plans?)
