2012- What will happen on 12/21???

We are all so lucky that they made that movie, 2012!!!!!! Now we can be sure what's going to happen!!!! Like, flying a plane trough a canyon that was spawned from an earthquake that makes florida sink in the ocean, Tidal waves that drop aircraft carriers on the white house (irony) and, and, and, the hymalaya will be flooded, but there will be this one guy who desperately runs towards his little house to ring a bell, and, and *head explodes*

Yeah I think the movie pretty much sums it up.

:lol Here's another little factoid: you're more likely to get eaten by a cybernetic shark in the safety of your own home, than for the Earth to be wracked by a GRB. 😉 GRBs are extremely rare events, and in the entire time multi-cellular life has existed on the planet, it hasn't been hit by a GRB. I think it's a fairly good approximation to say that it hasn't been hit by a GRB before that at all, but I'd have to dig deeper into geological events if anybody actually wishes to dispute this claim. :lol

As far as I know, every observed GRB has happened far outside of our galaxy. 🙂

I dunno what will happen on 12/21, but I can assure you that on 12/20 I will be deleting a lot of annoying chain mails warning me about the end of the world.

The Mayan Calendar doesn't end on that day, it just hits the whatever-century mark, or whatever-millenium mark, or whatever century-of-milleniums mark, and goes from 12.9.9.9.9 to 13.0.0.0.0

But in the real world, my friend Heidi will turn 28.

I know it is fact, but, as someone with inordinately ticklish feet, I still can never 'quite' accept the reality of the very idea of not having ticklish feet! It's like: "How is that even possible?". Yet, it is the truth!

Interesting. I find it difficult to believe that the Discovery channel would air that, as that channel is very science-centric.

However, the History channel has a propensity for airing shows such as MonsterQuest, UFO Hunters, and several religious shows without making the clarification that none of them are backed by verifiable evidence.

If I had to speculate, I'd say you got that info from the History channel. 😉

I love this X-Files/Coast to Coast AM/Ghost Hunters sorta stuff, but I'm also a skeptic...

Ever listen to Coast to Coast? Awesome late-night (on East coast, not so late in CA) talk show- every "crackpot" calls in and the host takes them perfectly seriously now matter how ridiculous their experiences or conspiracy theories seem.

Then I listen to Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast where they de-bunk everything
 
Yep, I listen to Coast to Coast with George Noory (as a bigtime skeptic). Some of the disinformation they put forth is almost as frightening as creationism... :O

In Tarot, DEATH only means change. There is death around us. constant change. "This version of myself is not perfect. Tomorrow I will be different. Nothing stays the same. The Energy Never Dies." So sue me, I can't quote the Black Eyed Peas, but if anything, at worst, there may be a nuclear disaster.
but at the very least, Barak Obama will be impeached. all scenarios between this may include the SECOND fall of the Roman Empire (U.S.A) , and the rise of a new government structure the likes we haven't conceptualized. Or... screw it with being all insightful, Martial Law, Anarchy, and Fallout 3. Neo-Serfdoms and Raiders.

That's what I think about 2012.

I remember as a young man reading Hal Lindsey's books in which he believed the rapture was going to happen in 1988. He presented quite the case, but alas, we're still here.

I personally think it's unwise to purport end-of-the-world predictions on any particular date, because some wacko group might just decide to make it happen, believing them selves to be the tool of fate.

People have been saying the world is going to end for years and everytime its been disapointment/relief. But im betting if something does happen on 2012 im hoping for first alien contact. Ive actually been looking into this stuff lately, and apparently the climate change happening on this planet is not just confined to earth, there are climate changes happening on mars, jupiter, saturn, venus etc so maybe something IS coming. One theory however is a magnetic pole shift. (meaning no electronic devices would work, and catastrophic weather changes.) but like i said people have been predicting this stuff for a while and were still here. And i really think we should leave "God" out of this <_< for the sake of civility.

That's an interesting idea. While the magnetic fields of planets have much to do with them (fyi, pole shifting is a hypothesis, not a theory), they don't play a role in the heating of the solar system - atleast not one that we have observed. You can blame the sun for that. You would think it's pretty obvious. The age of the sun and the energy it outputs are in direct correlation. This is why it is believed that once after the earth becomes too hot to inhabit (which will happen, but I cannot give you an approximate date unless I dig for it, I can if you want!), the ice caps on mars will melt and turn into oceans. Yes, there IS water and water-ice on mars. Actual H2O. It's a definite possibility, but we'll have to wait a few billion years to see... 😉

As far alien contact, this goes back to another discussion (see the thread about being "batshit insane") where I made a post about there not being more than 3 dimensions. In order for aliens to reach Earth within a reasonable amount of time, they would need to figure out a way to break the speed of light limit. As "oversexed" an equation E=MC² is, it explains that energy = mass, and light has 'infinite' energy. To even begin approaching light speed, you would need infinite energy, which also requires infinite mass. This would be physically impossible for any kind of machine or living creature.
