Sharing Information From My Pedicurist
The battle with keeping my feet as free from calluses and cracked heels as possible is eternal. For a long time, I tried just about everything that hit the market to try and combat--the care I had to put in nightly became a freeking 45 minute
project. Files, callus-planer, electric-spinny-sander-thingy, creams...I damn near needed a part-time job just to afford all the stuff. Eventually I started getting professional pedicures out of desperation, and while they were helping, I still fought with problems with my heels, outer edges of my feet under the little toes, mid-balls of my feet and the exterior edges of my big toes. Pedicures made it better, but it would still take Summer (my regular pedicurist) almost an hour and a half to take care of my feet if I waited longer than a couple weeks between visits.
During one of the times I went to see to see her, I sat in her chair pissing and moaning about it while she was working on me, telling her everything I just related above.
She said, "Okay, three things. With your feet especially. First, about your shoes: stop wearing any kind of open shoes like sandals or flip-flops, make sure they have backs to support your heels or they'll crack, especially if they're already dry and you carry extra weight. Think about what happens to the skin of a tomato if you push down hard on the top of it--that's what you're dealing with. And don't wear any kind of shoes with leather insoles if you aren't wearing socks, it sucks the moisture out of your skin and dries you out faster than anything.
"Second, sorry but you have to keep the whole barefoot-thing to a total minimum, even in your house. If you're going to walk, wear something that has padding between your feet and the floor, even if it's just slippers, but wear something
all the time. Save being barefoot for your "special occasions". (Referring to foot worship and such. She's fully aware of my fixation with my feet and is pretty much also aware of my tickling/foot worship activities.)
"And third, you're spending way too much money on all those creams and lotions and crap. You want fast results? Get yourself a tub of the cheapest petroleum jelly you can find, totally slather your feet with it
thick, like icing a cake, every night, and I mean
every single night, put on a pair of heavy socks (she called them "spa socks") and sleep in them. You do those three things exactly the way I'm telling you and I guarantee that inside of two weeks, you'll see some major results. And then I won't have to bust my ass like this every time, either." (Summer is a young Chinese girl from New Orleans and has never, ever had a problem with speaking her mind to me. Ever.

)
I relate this to you guys because I, too, dislike calluses, most especially my own, and what Summer told me works. Now all I have to do is pumice or good foot scrub in the shower, recommended footwear (I know a lot of people would hate that idea--I did, too--but the desire to lose the rough feet outweighed the hate for me
😀) and the nightly Vaseline/sock ritual...my feet seriously haven't looked this good in years, it's waaay easier and it's
cheap!
