Liquidate My Generation

It's a shame that the OP is so controversial and causing friction between members because this subject would have been an interesting one to discuss in a positve, civil manner.

Maybe I read a different OP, but the OP in this thread did not start off that way from the beginning. But meangry new that, and he also knew it probably wasn't going to be taken well.

There may be some truth in some of your generalizations, but I think you're a dick for the way you chose to put this out there. That's just my personal opinion. It doesn't take much wisdom, maturity or experience to target someone who's very young.

Really, bravo for being more mature than the people who are younger than you. What an achievement.

This. Maturity is not proving yourself to be less vapid than your contemporaries. If you truly have more substance, people will figure it out without you going down the elitist path. It'd be great if you used this energy toward something more productive. Maybe volunteer at a local public school if you are so concerned with the direction that our youth are going?

To everyone jumping up and down to applaud meangry's post, just understand the context. This is NOT a rant about a generation of young people becoming more self absorbed or vapid, although he certainly backs that angle up well. This is an attack on the girl who posted the vlog whose name has been conspicuously omitted from all of his posts in his thread because if included it would be very obvious that this is just another in a line of thinly veiled attacks.

It's a shame really because on the surface, the OP raises some excellent points. If this post was simply a generalized rant at an entire cultural trend I'd have no issue with it.

Meangry you are a smart, well-educated guy, that much you have made very clear to all of us. But seriously, any of us paying attention know that you and your female best friend on this forum have been picking on this forum member for some time, whether by generalized rants such as these or derailing her threads. We get it you don't like her. The point is made. Let's see you start using your massively superior intellect to start accomplishing something more useful to society than bullying a 19 year old girl.

Wow!

This is about another forum member? Geez, I'm so dull!

Well, as far as the generational decline stuff is concerned, it's been going on forever (or at least since Rock n Roll and the 50s). I still believe much that was said is true.

But if this is a personal thing against one specific person, my post was NOT, trust me.

The more technology empowers people to have their own platform the more they will take advantage of it for whatever purpose they choose. Not a new trend for sure, just more evident today in the era of facebook, blogspot, and such.

I'm sure it's quite clear your post was not personal Kis, no worries.

I didn't know it was about a member here either. I assumed it was just some silly teen on YouTube or something.

I think I may have encountered some fresh drama here! Yay!:cheer::cheer::cheer:

Anyways, I agree with meangry, but it's indeed not just this generation, humans are just stupid in general. Thing is that this generation has got the tools available to tell the rest of the world how stupid they really are.

But I see idiots from all generations and every time I think to myself: what kind of idiot thought it would be a good idea to give those people the right to vote?

Heck, populism has been revived by some idiot here in 2002, proclaiming that this country was one big mess (a big mess which I personally have never seen anywhere; we've actually never done better than we're doing now) and since then we've been going down the slippery slope that leads to Italian Politics.

Mmkay. Interesting. Who is it?

Simple question:

If this kind of stuff bugs you, why are you going out of your way (because we all now VLogs just don't pop up on the screen and scream at you "watch me, or I'll kill you" or some other stupid thing) to spend all this time on something you could easily avoid entirely?

It is much easier and beneficial towards oneself to ignore those things which they do not like and are not essential towards life.

Besides every generation has issues and the world will never be perfect. You can rant and rave all you wish, but there will be problems from now until forever, so why not try to find some good in the world. At least that is more productive. Who knows, maybe you could educate those that you think can not learn? But just plain complaining will never solve anything.

Personally I am of the firm belief that actions speak louder then words.

I'm not sure I could disagree with this post more if I tried. Yea, he was a dick the way he put it but who cares? He made a very valid point. Him drawing a valid point, and choosing a single nameless person as an example of that point, in no way reflects his maturity. In fact, the entire "nyah nyah you're like a kid!" immaturity jab a fairly weak attempt at being condescending. It doesn't take much wisdom, maturity or experience to see when something is desperately wrong with the world. And this is true. I'm PART of the generation that he is knocking on (give or take a few years. 23 years old) and have dealt with this sort of thing before.

A perfect example is a microwave. You can't imagine how many times I've seen my peers getting anxious waiting for a 30 second microwave cooking time to complete. As if it is some giant rush. Or how many girls I've seen flip out because such and such a boyfriend didn't text her this particular hour, so he must hate her.

I think the OP is dead on with one exception; the issues discussed are NOT exclusive to his or younger generations. The only things missing from my generation were technology, internet access, and global pov.

I agree with this entirely. It's not the generation that is affected, it's the entire age. We're getting spoiled with instant gratification and for some people (not all, but some) it's having a monstrous affect.

I have put a couple of quotes from Hitler on my Facebook profile. It's funny, because it's a slap in the face to all those greedy Jews!

Stop generalizing. Hate towards young people is just sickening.

I'm not necessarily certain how you can compare his post to quotes from Hitler. First off, Meangry hasn't set up concentration camps for teens and slaughtered a whole mess of em before making this statement (or planning to after).

I agree with your later statement that this is very much cliche. The idea that just by tossing the name "Hitler" in means that you win hardly stands to reason. There is absolutely no comparison of the two at all. In any way. Period.

Alright, just got back online. Oh this is going to be a fun response.

Betweens calls of maturity and "use of intellect in a positive, constructive manner", I am just left in the lurch. It is a rant. And when I put 'Liquidate My Generation' in a title, this isn't me picking on kids younger than me. It's me going after people from that age to those even older than me who grew up during this time period.

Of course, this is not necessarily exclusive to females of my generation. As we have seen more and more people going on the internet, we've seen this philosophy take hold. It's here. It is practically everywhere on the internet. It is in our media. Look at the Erin Andrews story and see the thin white line of sexuality in media coverage has afforded her opportunities, while at the same time caused her privacy to be broken. Girls flash a little skin, and an internet community of young men and older men who fancy getting super close with that person are going to defend that person, regardless of what they say or do. I have moved on from the Andrews side bar because saying she deserved what just happened to her is erroneous.

The two entities feed each other; the male feels like he is different from a pack, and the girl gets like she is beautiful, or that she is actually correct in all her assessments.

I am sure this could have been done more clearly and more effectively if it was plotted out in the manner of a thesis and maintained a level of disconnection by me. However, some of the arguments I wanted to bring up, I feel, would have lost their bite if a certain level of intensity was not reached. I was aware what would be said. On the side of thought experiment, the responses gave very intriguing responses. And it is rather difficult to really argue against these responses, mostly because they are asking or positing things that were not explicitly promised, or are instead lecturing life lessons on being zen. And I wonder if, by chance, the very manner of a rant shuts down communication.

I love how your explanation conveniently sidesteps the fact that you yourself made the post about a specific teenage girl, not "people from that age to those even older than me who grew up during this time period."

I had no idea

This is about a specific forum member?!

Dude. If you're going to rant and all, that's fine. I do it all the time, but I never direct my rants at any one person. I'm not hear to hurt feelings, and I'm not here to insult.

I still say that you make some good points, though I can't support you calling out a specific TMFer.

Bad form, man.

It's a shame that the OP is so controversial and causing friction between members because this subject would have been an interesting one to discuss in a positve, civil manner. Some really good points on both sides but it's a shame you have to sift through insults to get to them.

The OP only put this out there because he knew the reaction he would get..

He is rude, crude, and nowhere near as intelligent as he demands you all believe...quite immature and not worth the read......

Good heavens. I don't particularly agree with the OP, but big up for the amazing rant. You should be in a festival show. With a mullet or something.

Seriously though, I don't see an awful lot of difference between my generation-I was born in 1980, and grew up without a mobile or an email address or a blackberry-and my students, who were all born in the mid-90's. Apart from the fact that they've taught me to do amazing thing with my i-Pod. Teenagers have always been deeply conservative people with varying levels of self-obsession. Then they grow up.

Maybe I missed something here Jeff. Are we all supposed to know who this girl is? I know I don’t have a clue, but even if some here do, the reference in the OP could be to any number of thousands of teenage Vlog postings that are increasing in number everyday.

As the parent of girls that grew up in the generation being discussed, I remember numerous occasions where the words “stop wasting time with that nonsense” came out of my mouth for events that could easily be the topic of this thread.

This is a growing problem in our society, and certainly worth discussion regardless of the OP’s original intent.

God woman! You need your own place on Comedy Central! But even they might blush at some of your thoughts! :rowfull::bwahaha:

I sure hope so; like I posted earlier, several in my generation still have a lot of growing up to do unless they die as narcisstic and immature as they've been--just much older!

Thanks again, Kis. You're awfully kind to my ego.

True, true. It's a bit worrying to come across an adult who seems not to have progressed beyond the latter stages of mylifeisruinedbecauseIcan'tfindthesereallyamazingsilverleggingsinmysize.

But we're all allowed to regress a little bit, aren't we? I, for example, laughed for most of the afternoon over a dirty joke involving a vicar and an ostrich.

No, you are not supposed to know who this girl is. Meangry certainly didn't want that. He said so in his OP when he said "How to frame it without posting the video." Posting the video would have revealed the vlogger's identity and the appearance of a generalized non-specific rant would have been gone. I figured it out and I'm guessing Jeff did too, because for those that notice, the OP has a pattern of picking on the person I suspected he was referencing in his original post. A quick internet search of that person's vlogs turned up exactly the video that meangry referenced in his original post. So yes, it could have been any number of hundreds of thousands of girls, but it wasn't.

Tony, I absolutely agree with you that meangry did raise what could be a legitimate topic of discussion and if you wish to carry it on as an academic discussion, by all means have it. There's a world of difference between discussing an issue or problem from a broad spectrum, than using an issue as a subtle way of bullying somone.

I'm assuming Jeff knows something we don't, and has seen the exact vlog that meangry is speaking about (which some of us haven't seen). Otherwise this particular post of his would be pointlessly defamatory.

My original assumption was that Meangry was speaking of a random no-name girl from an undisclosed vlogging site like livejournal or myspace or something. I'll just have to take Jeff's word for it and assume that he has proof that it is someone from the forums, in which case I would have to take back whatever good things I said so far. A directed rant, even if none of us know who it is towards, is terribly hurtful if placed in a position the person could see. And it's better not to run off members of the TMF like that.

People turn to the internet for all kinds of comfort. Comfort for their low self-esteem, low self-image, freakish fetish, or sexual tendencies.

When a person behaves in a way only to feed the insatiable void they have inside for attention, love, acceptance and says things that if overheard in real life would be appalling, patting them on the back and coddling them is doing more harm than good.

But that is going to happen everywhere, in every walk of life. Facebook alone shows me what happens to people after high school, after college, when they are coddled to such an extent. Can these people tell you the name of the vice president? No, they can't. Can these people tell you anything of interest? Well that depends what you find interesting, though I would say for most people, no.

It's disturbing for me to have felt a part of this age bracket for years. I keep waiting for that maturation process to begin and it hasn't. Ten to twenty years may make a difference, but if it takes that long for a person to come back to Earth, that's really unfortunate.

Of course, there are the people who don't follow MTV culture like members of a cult, or subscribe to ideas of oral-sex-is-the-new-goodnight-kiss. For these people, I am deeply appreciative.

PS. I'm not getting involved in whatever theories people are going to make about the OP being about certain members. Also, don't fucking bring me into it. I derailed a damn Harry Potter thread, I acted like a bitch, and I apologized for it. So female best friend or not, leave me out of it. Kthanx!
