major winter storm about to hit half the nation...are YOU prepared?

We're in our lull here. I lucked out. The neighbor raked his own roof while I cleared my driveway/walk. It's pretty quiet out there at the moment. I'm sure it will be hopping once folks start getting home from work and have to clear theirs. One other neighbor asked about doing her roof. But, I've pushed my back as far as I can for today. So, she's going to have her son come borrow the rake in a while so he can do it for her. Who would have thought that a simple tool like a roof rake would be so in demand?

There is still a Winter Storm Warning here. The new forecast is for freezing rain and ice tonight, transitioning to heavy rain tomorrow. Hopefully the power will stay on. We are probably lucky to be getting the rain tomorrow, because the one to two inches of rain expected, would be one to two feet of snow, if the temp was 10 degrees colder.

Mitch

Pro-tip from your Canadian neighbors on how to survive the storm: if it gets too cold, you can actually seek refuge inside a polar bear. Simply allow yourself to be swallowed by the bear, and you can ride out the blizzard while being gently rocked to sleep by the lumbering beast.

The only tricky part is when it comes time to pass yourself; the bears do not like this part at all.

Hoooo boy, Windsor, ON is getting pummelled by some snowy-ass winds. My poorly fixed windows are getting a workout. Snowpocalypse 2011!!!

Right now we are having heavy freezing rain. I'm seriously worried. I hope our power stays on. They are expecting an extended period of freezing rain and ice, before it finally changes to rain. I think I would rather have a foot of snow, as opposed to this.

What a winter! Oh, and another icy mix.. or maybe snow... is expected on Saturday! Joy!

Mitch

Freezing rain is a bitch. Not a ton of ice for us Great Lakesers yet... still just a lot of snow and a lot of wind...

on the plus side? SNOW DAY. Campus most likely going to be shut down tomorrow.

We're getting dumped on big time right now... being told we'll be getting upwards of two feet of snow by the morning :sowrong:

lol... don't get me wrong. I love snow too... just not so much of it all at once 😀 That being said, I'm happy its not ice like some of you south of us have been getting 😱

The entire property is buried. I had to shovel a ton of snow off the porch earlier just to get the front door open. The drift on the porch is 4 foot high. The real job begins when I have to get to the tractor and hope that a.) it starts b.) get it out of the barn c.) get to the end of the 1/8 mile long drive way.

Every road in my area, including I-44 from Springfield to Tulsa is closed.

We are in Emergency conditions right now with about 50,000 without power. If you are caught driving whatever the cops decide to do with you is your fault. Trying to clear the roads is like trying to plow marbles. I hit the drift, it flies into the air swarming me like bees blinding my vision, and then lands in the original spot looking like I never passed.

Take THAT global warming!

I'm going to dress my kid up in snow gear and throw him outside at some point. 😀

and then we'll have HOT CHOCOLATE!!

Icicles hanging from the wires and trees. Roads are icy. Schools closed for a second day.

We have about 2" of a snow sleet mix just since early this morning. It's let up a bit at the moment. But, it's been coming down pretty good. At least the power is still on...so far. On the plus side, the weight of this is packing down the snow banks at the curb. They were about 6' tall last night. Now, they're closer to 5'.

I'm prepared for everything. Even cannibalism. Got my fork handy.

outside my door...

Tried to start tractor...too cold. Snow drifts up to three feet in my yard.

Blizzard of 2011

I am looking out my back deck this morning (Wednesday) and I see 2-3 foot snow drifts. Here in nothern Missouri we got 14 inches of snow in the past couple of days.

I think my kids have been to school for a total of two weeks since they came back from winter break on January 3rd because of the weather.

I work in manufacturing and yesterday for the first time in 15 years, they shut the factory down and sent us home at noon. This storm must be bad. lol

Watching the news, hearing of roof and entire building collapses where people didn't bother to get rid of the excess snow. If you're in an area that's gotten lots of snow and have more than a foot on your roof, get it cleared before the next round!

Yeah, we've been having loads of fun around here too.

Yesterday, a Value City Furniture truck missed my front lawn tree by about six inches. It was like watching a trainwreck for awhile.....:trainwreck:

If he would've hit the tree I would've made headline news.:banghead:

Maybe you have done this? 😀
