Smoking weed? Mouth on bong? Chronic? Sticky Icky?

WTF?

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/new...el-Phelps-caught-with-bong-cannabis-pipe.html

As with usual arguments on olympic athletes and weed or whatnot

Is marijuana a performance enhancer? Does he swim faster cuz he is hungry?

dont have a problem with it if he chooses to get baked, i mean most do it in their teen years

Exactly. I can't believe the amount of bullshit people are throwing around now saying his medals should be taken away. Its just pot. It helped him in no way. But I guess if Jim Thorpe can have his medals stripped away for accepting a few dollars to play a baseball game anything's possible.

He was also picked up on a DUI when he was 19. But I'm not trying to beat the guy up. He's a flawed human, like any on of us. Granted, he needs to be way smarter since he's in the public eye, but no way should there even be discussion of him losing his medals. That's just ridiculous.

Why? Just because he is an athlete that won medals he now has to be the perfect angel and those not in the public eye can do what they want behind closed doors.??..lol not acceptable...either we all can or no oe can...

Celebs should not get preferential treatment for their status... nor should they be treated differently than anyone else in cases like this just because we hold them to a higher moral standard...we have no right to do so...

Well, perhaps "needs to be" was too strong a statement. I probably should have said that he should think about being a bit smarter. I'm not here to beat up on the guy, though. He does represent my hometown well, after all. 😀

It's not about whether it helped him win his medals or not. Phelps is seen as a role model to kids, whether he wants to be or not. No parent wants their kid emulating a guy who smokes pot.

fair enough but wether he is a role model or not, he cant have his medals taken away for smoking pot. i mean the guy doesnt say make me your kids role model, he can be the biggest drug addict, booze hound, asshole he chooses to be its his life. Just because he swims in the olympics doesnt change the fact that he has the right to do what he wants

Oh no! KIDS WILL START SMOKING POT BECAUSE MICHAEL PHELPS DOES!!!!!!!

Or

How many even follow the olympics and note how nobody cared about him after it till this incident. The whole sports rolemodel thing is blown out of proportions, lets be happy Tom Brennerman didnt get ahold of him, if he did he'd have trouble splitting his time between sucking off phelps and tim tebow

Couldn't agree with you more, but it is what it is Ray. People do give them preferential treatment and are going to hold him to a higher standard and as another poster said, he should be smarter in public. Besides he has endorsements; if he wants to keep them, he'd better be more careful because his image is on the box if you know what I mean.

I personally don't care what he does; he's a grown man and it's not like he was caught doing steroids. But there are a lot of kids watching and they're highly impressionable.

To me this is just an issue of someone needing to realize that they represent a large number of corporations. I don't care if Michael Phelps wants to smoke pot, but if he wants to do it he needs to make sure that the people around him aren't pointing a camera phone in his general direction. Part of being a celebrity is putting out a certain kind of image. This is the second time he has been caught doing something illegal and at some point it does make you start to question his judgement if he isn't smart enough to drink or smoke his weed in the privacy of his own home.

I agree, I don't think his medals should be taken away, but that's not up to you or me. The Olympic committee or whoever is in charge has to make the decision based on his irresponsibility. He is an Olympic gold medalist and getting caught smoking pot tarnishes not only his image but the Olympics too. I won't blame them if they do take his medals away.

I honestly don't care what he does, but he is now in the public's eye. He is seen as a role model to kids. So he has to be careful of what he does. If he wants to smoke pot, I don't care, as long as he does it in the privacy of his own home.

they already said they werent taking them away, and couldnt unless he tested positive during the olympics

Bingo....guys like Phelps tend to get surrounded by a lot of groupies and yes men, but somebody who really cares about him needs to sit him down and pull out a note pad and write down just how many multi millions in endorsement dollars his stupid public chronic smoking pic just cost him and his family.

Cannabis, or marijuana, is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which sets rules and oversees testing for Olympic-level sports. Had Phelps tested positive for marijuana during competition, his medals would have been stripped from him, and he would have faced other sanctions, including a ban from olympic and international competition. Visa, Omega, AT&T and Speedo corporations disapprove of Phelps actions, and he will take a hit in endorsements over this. Those are the rules, whether Phelps or anyone else agrees with them or not.

Right now I think he got lucky and none of his sponsors are not pulling out as of yet. But I think all of these sponsorship contracts have a vague "morality" stipulation in them and I'm sure smoking marijuana would void the contract. When you represent companies like that you have to be conscious of the image you portray in public. People close to him just need to sit him down and tell him that if he wants to smoke pot he needs to do it in the privacy of his own home or else it may end up costing him some serious money next time.

He loses a non weed friendly sponsor and gains a weed friendly sponsor

He loses respect from some people and gains from others

Phelps has nothing to worry about.

I think you over estimate how many "weed friendly" sponsors there are out there.

The brands he could lose are brands like Hilton, Kellogg and AT&T. With the way the economy is athletes are not immune to losing sponsors. Buick pulled out on Tiger Woods and granted Phelps will probably never lose something like Speedo because he uses them for his sport, but just regular brands who want him for advertising could back off if he keeps it up.

Yeah, go tell that to Kobe Bryant-that worked well for him back in the day!

Phelps is a grown man; someone needs to teach him the definition of discretion before he goes bankrupt.

That was at best, poor judgement at work; at worst, just plain stupid.
