Em Es, I think Germans are totally different from Americans. Really, we are. And I am saying that from experience. Americans are way more open, allow people into groups way more easily. In Germany, it is much harder to talk to people, to make friends. We kinda stay to ourselves, we are not very warm. You can sit in a train with someone for hours, and you never exchange a word.
So naturally, you do not want to leave your friends, your environment, your family. In most cases, the family lives very closely together. My family members except my aunt all live in one city!
It's also very different with work. When you guys talk about work, you talk about 'jobs'. When we talk about 'jobs', we think about working at McDonald's, and delivering newspapers. We have our position, and we will not very likely leave it unless we find something way better or unless we really really hate being there. We are what we do!
Of course, there are exceptions, but most Germans will not leave their stable environment, their family, friends and position for something as unstable as fresh love!
