Random banter thread 2

well, I just woke up after 10 hours of sleep....I know, it must sound crazy to ya, but its been a long week. ALL HAIL THE MAGIC CONSHELL! 😛

I know the one from Lord of the Flies was a conch shell. (We spent a few weeks back in ninth grade going over that book.)

*hears the S word* Gah, please don't say that, it brings back bad memories! *shudders*

Was William Golding the guy who wrote LotF? I'm not to big on books, and it's been to long since I've read LotF.

Yeah, he wrote it. He realyl had no clue it was going to be that big either. He was a School English teacher when he wrote it as I recall.

Huh, that's pretty cool. I should probably go back and read it soon, since I might have to in college anyway. Though that's much easier said than done for a master procrastinator such as myself, heh heh:sweatdrops:

😛 . If you've got to write anything on it, just say microcosm a few times. Good marks for sure!

Microcosm! Gonna have to remember that then.....I better make a note somewhere.

What's a counch shell, btw? Can't remember what it is....

It's this wierd sea shell that you can blow into and it makes a trumpet like sign. They find one on the island and use it as a way to call meetings, and it becomes a symbol of power.

Oh OK, now I remember. I've heard of many shells in stories and such which made trumpet sounds when blown into. Wish I could find one....

Aye, when in doubt, just say microcosm! 😎

Ahhh Lord of the Flies. I remember reading it and doing an entire unit/report on the symbolism in the book. The conch, Simon, Piggy (I think that's what his name was)...I hated that book back then but in retrospect, it wasn't that bad. Same goes for The Great Gatsby. 🙂

One thing that kind of got me though was the end, with the author saying the kid "Wept for the end of innocence, for the fly through the air of a true wise friend called Piggy," and for something else. Now, maybe it's just me, but could he not have also been crying because other kids were trying to kill him?

could very well be. Ever see the films? There's 2 of them ,and in one of them they see a boat on the horizon, and in another they see a plane. Why they decided to change it I dont know >.> .

I saw one of them a while back. I don't remember which one though. I'm thinking it was the older one. It does suck though when they change stuff like that around. It kind of detracts from the feel of the original somehow, you know?

Yeah, they should just stick to the original plot. I think the funniest book to film muck up I've ever seen though has to be Day of the Triffids. John Wyndam wrote an absolutely fantastic book, just like most of his books (The crysalids, the trouble with lichen etc etc), and the film was so absolutely god awful, and hardly even corresponded to the book at all >< .

Wow. Even more different than the Two Towers?

I dunno...if you've seen Roman Polanski's depiction of Macbeth...he went pretty overboard only Roman Polanski can...

The two towers was still very similar to the book to be fair. I know a lot of people pick out all the little flaws, but there was so much in those books anyways. The day of the triffids is the same as the book in that it has the triffids in it. And that's really it.

I'll raise you "The Raven" with Vincent Price and Peter Lorre. That's the only movie I've seen that had "Quote the raven, 'How the hell should I know?!'"

Fine, I'm going ALL IN with Field of Dreams from the book "Shoeless Joe". The movie, while good, does not do the book a lot of justice. The focus of the movie was on the field while the book's focus was on dreams. And while I understand that FoD couldn't use him in the movie... Terrence Mann is no J.D. Salinger! What do you intend to call with or will you fold?
