The pandemic may have been a bigger blow than anything else. The troupe that used to perform at Canelli and other venues in northern Italy (they were even hired to set up in shopping malls, and people loved it) was active through 2019, but their website went offline during the pandemic and never came back. As far as I can tell, the Canelli festival itself - even though it was THE tourist event for the whole region for decades, and encouraged the tickling stocks for 20 years (again, they were very popular with the tourists) - stopped in 2020 and never came back.
I think you are right, the pandemic was a big factor. All events were cancelled and I guess that even after the restrictions were lifted, people still tried to maintain some social distancing rules and wouldn't agree to be locked in stocks and touched by others.
Also, from what I remember, Canelli actually stopped much earlier, and I think the last one took place in 2016. It was postponed because the city couldn't afford to organise this event any longer. But perhaps they will renew it at some point.
But I still think that the Renfaire Tickling might not return for some time. I think we tend to overlook that there was literally only one group in Italy doing it and it wasn't that common. So if this group ceased to exist, it is natural that the whole activity disappeared. Perhaps someone will renew it
