Its all in where you shop. There are some great deals passing by and people are unaware of them.
Yes, while its true that $100 or whatever sizable ammount is alot to spend at once, consider what I've said and that you'd be spending the same ammount and more anyways.
More bang for your buck, so to speak. It doesn't make an incredible difference in price, but I've often seen that it covers shipping and handling charges or actually leaves room to buy something else thats not as expensive.
Its really about playing the North American market (in regards to the anime industry in this case) and learning its restoration/inflation periods and using that to your advantage.

And as far as not being able to afford it, alot of people say that because they don't budget themselves well and many live beyond their means to begin with. The average person can afford alot more than they think they can when they spend in moderation. How you manage and save your money is very important, obviously.
