A gunman opened fire Friday inside a Connecticut elementary school, and several people are dead, including multiple children and the shooter, Fox News confirms.

A law enforcement official said the shooter is believed to be a father of one of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Authorities said the gunman, who was not identified, is dead. An official with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the man apparently had two guns.

I'm in complete grief right now...evil exists and it must be confronted and defeated.
 
27 dead...18 of them kids...elementary school in Newtown Ct....I have no words....
 
I can't read the news without crying. Innocent people, so many of them children - I can't imagine the pain and grief.
 
sadly- it looks like close to 20 innocent young children lost their lives today - over what, why - why children -
 
My youngest is in kindergarten and i am in tears. i cannot imagine the terror those babies felt!!
 
Ryan Lanza, DEAD. Boiling in blood as we speak...

The shooter, identified as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, lived in Hoboken, N.J., and had ties to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., according to officials. The gunman was found dead inside the building, but it remains unclear who killed him.

Local news outlets report that the shooting occurred inside a kindergarten classroom, and that all the pupils in that classroom are unaccounted for.

An official with knowledge of the situation said the shooter was armed with a .223-caliber rifle. The motive is not yet known.

As I write this, almost every news channel and programme in the United Kingdom is covering this story extensively.

This massacre, with so many young children caught up in it, represents the death of innocence, once again. An absolutely horrific tragedy.
 
This is one of the most horrible tradegies I've ever seen. I cant imagine why anyone would want to massacre innocent children.

My thoughts and prayers turn to the victims and their familes. As for Ryan Lanza, if there is a Hell, I hope he burns in it for all eternity.
 
It's unbelievable. I've been watching the news all afternoon, and I marvel at the way they try to explain the reasoning of this "extremely troubled young man."

The guy was evil, pure and simple.
 
Adam Lanza. Ryan Lanza is his brother, who has been taken in for questioning. Adam Lanza was the shooter, who went to the school his mother worked at, killed her and many others, before dying himself.
 
I cannot express how horrific this day will be for the parents of those young children. I felt tears roll down my cheek as I watched this unfold.

I know, Kara. My apologies for the mistake. I just watched the full coverage for the first time at 6pm.

As everyone knows, I watch WPVI from Philadelphia online. Their lead weather caster, Cecily Tynan, looked very emotional. She said she is from Newtown CT, and went through the school system there. I may have posted before that I spent most of my childhood in Westport, CT,a nearby town, so I know the area well.

Tonight was about the most emotional that I've ever seen WPVi's lead anchor Jim Gardner in the almost 14 years Ive been watching him.

The question that keeps coming to my mind is why. Why did Lanza kill all those innocent people, including so many children? I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot about that in the upcoming weeks.
 
Latest I am hearing is that Lanza killed his mother at home, then decided to go to the school and kill her students. I am horrified.
 
Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by this tragedy. A dark day in American history and even worse it happened in my home state of CT, less than an hour away from me. Despicable act from a psychopath who not only killed his mom with her own gun, but took the time to go to the school where she worked and killed twenty innocent kids and other. Absolutely terrible, don't know how any can contemplate doing something like this.
 
This is indeed a dark day. My thoughts go out to all of the parents who suffered a huge loss today. And, the families of all the other victims of this terrible trajedy.

The thing that really irked me, is that the psychopath killed himself in the end. If this was is endgame plan: he should have killed himself first.
 
Horrible tragedy. Instead of preparing for Chrismas these parents are making funeral arrangements. Incomprehensible.

What? You mean the "extremely troubled young man" who viciously and cowardly took 26 innocent lives with 20 of them being children?? What the hell do little kids do that would justify murdering them like deer hunting season?? Absolutely nothing!! And I'm madder than hell about it too! I wish the media would try to spin this ANY way than what it was; a sick psycopathic SOB who killed his mother then viciously murdered 26 innocent people! Then in his cowardice, took his own life......yeah, he was extremely troubled all right......:sowrong:

As I said in another thread, I hope he lifted his eyes in hell and is making himself an eternal rotisserie chicken at this moment and forever!! What a piece of shit!!

I'm sorry, this has been extremely overwhelming and particularly as a parent. Well now the little kids get to do fire drill, tornado drill, and now "just in case a crazy ass psychopath shoots his mother then comes to the school to shoot some more" drill?? WTF?????

I can't even imagine what the parents are going through. They packed lunches, dropped their kids off at school, gave them a kiss and told them to have a nice day. Now there'll be 20 small caskets and 6 adult casket funerals to be had in the next several days. Hey, don't stop at little school kids....next thing you know they'll be knocking off daycare centers and preschools!!!! Who needs a bottom these days???

Hey if someone over the age of 18 decides that they don't wanna' live anymore, who am I to stop you from offing yourself? But can you do the rest of us a favor and go by yourself and not take any of us with you??

I've looked at the photos of the day and this has to be worst thing I have ever seen. Gunning down innocent young children is the product of a disturbed mind, and took the cowardly way out by offing himself to avoid responsibility. The torture isn't over yet...we get to learn the names of those he slaughtered.

Adam Lanza is currently in the Seventh Circle with arrows in his ass. Boiling blood is a bitch.
 
kis, you expressed it very eloquently. I've been so devestated and numb since I heard about it, that I couldnt even get my thoughts together.. but again,.. as you said.

We hear of people committing suicide. We even hear of people killing. parents.. classmates.. teachers who they knew.. All that is sick and twisted enough. As you said.. what did two dozen innocent children possibly do to this psycho to even make him possibly justify wanting to end their lives? Someone made a funny face at him once when he visited his mother's school?

I've been alive almost 43 years. I've heard of many, many sick things in that time. I honestly, truly think this is perhaps the worst tradegy of this sort that I've ever heard of in my life, because of the innocent victims who were lost, and the senseless nature of it.
 
My heart is just hurting over this. No one deserves to go through this horror. You send your children to our schools thinking that it is safer than our streets. You trust us to protect your little ones, and this happens! Besides locked doors, a resource officer or two and a metal detector wand (if we are lucky), we are ill-equipped to stop this madness.

Something has to change.
