I honestly don't see the problem with LOL. To me, it's just a way to say that's funny. Doesn't have to be laugh out loud riotous hilarity, despite what the acronym may mean. To me, there's a choice between LOL, haha, and XD. I'll generally just wait and see what the other person uses, for this reason, ironically enough. Who knew that someone could get so irritated over being amused?

Another one: "To whom it may concern"
Well, if you know who it concerns, why are you addressing them this way? By saying this, are you taking the stance that your messege is intended for whomever would read it, or only for certain people who might read it? If a letter is intended for everyone, then it would make sense to address them as a group of people. If you're refering to specific individuals or a group of specific individuals (like a committee or club) or peoples within a business, you may as well just address them in the letter.
Also, "to whom it may concern" sounds a bit indifferent, almost as if you don't even care who recieves word in the first place, you're just assuming whomever needs to get it will get it and whomever it concerns will be concerned. I can see how you might be trying to make an annoucement to as many people as possible by saying it that way, but it just doesn't feel proper or formal to me.
