January 20th: The Pittsburgh Steelers win their 4th Super Bowl by beating the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 in Super Bowl XIV held at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
January 13th: Bad day in Washington D. C. as an Air Florida airplane plunges into the Potomac River killing 78 people. A Washington Metro crash killed 3 people on the same day.
1984: Mötley Crüe member Vince Neil is involved in a serious car accident. He was drunk at the time, and Razzle (Nicholas Dingley) of Hanoi Rocks was killed in the accident.
1986: The Legend of Zelda (designed by Shigeru Miyamoto for the Nintendo Famicom Disk System), the first in The Legend of Zelda series, a spiritual forerunner of console role-playing games is released.
1989: (July 26) A federal grand jury indicts Cornell University student Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. for releasing a computer virus, making him the first person to be prosecuted under the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
1981: (January 20) Ronald Reagan succeeds Jimmy Carter, becoming the 40th President of the United States. Minutes later, Iran releases the 52 Americans held for 444 days, ending the Iran hostage crisis.
1984: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated by two Sikh bodyguards; 1,000 killed in anti-Sikh riots which follow; her son Rajiv succeeds her.
1986: (January 28) STS-51-L: Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrates 73 seconds after launch, killing the crew of 7 astronauts including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. (And in November I was born. 😀)
January 4th: A Railroad Wreck in Chase, Maryland leaves 16 people dead as an Amtrak Train collides with Engines that ran a Stop Signal and were on the Mainline.
