the chatroom is dead; long live the chatroom!

Here's my experience...I love the new room and it works great with my little laptop's webcam, but the last 3 times I've gone in, a stupid virus-looking thing has landed on my computer (two different computers). I was able to jump out of the chat room in time to avoid problems on the laptop, but my desktop wasn't so lucky. Basically, two pop-up notifications come up about every 10-20 seconds from "Spyware Protect" saying my computer is infected, and offering a fix (for money of course). This thing also puts a little icon on the lower bar of the window, wihch I think is supposed to mimic an MS icon, but clearly is not. On both occasions on the desktop, I've had to do a "system restore" and reset my computer to an earlier date. I do have the Cox Security Suite and MacAfee but it doesn't help with this.
Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

Sorry for the back-to-back posts (bad form, I know), but I just saw nylon's comment below and had to respond.

I have been having issues with the ads that run . Even with pop-up blocker.

last night totally freaked out comp with 34 "threat detected" did a complete scan & had 5 infections. Cannot say which ones. I do know have had several
instances when have just been typing & all of a sudden ad just takes over.

Someone had mentioned a "ad blocker" program so am lookin into that.

Hopefully can get bugs worked out, it is a cool addition!

This is the exact one I get, with the same "34 threats detected", etc, which confirms that it's total bullsh*t. It makes my computer basically unusable. Fortunately, doing the system restore gets rid of it.

This virus thing happens to alot of us whether we're using mic/cam or not. What it seems to be is a popup/ad for virus protection that is designed to look like your "My Computer" window, or something else on your actual computer, and not the internet. I've found that usually you can just hit the back button and it'll take you right back to the chatroom. Sometimes, however, you have to close the entire window and reopen a new one.

I had this same exact type of pop-up from another site I visited. Was most alarming. It asked me first if I wanted to do the scan. I said no it did the scan anyway. I shut down the My Computer looking window down fast. A virus and spyware scan (Eset Smart Security) of my system came up clean. I have a Yahoo pop up blocker but this thing went right by it. Not sure what it is.

This exactly and the same thing popped up a couple times on BTR as well. I am thinking it has something to do with the type of chatroom used. Hope it can be resolved quickly. I found that letting the chat load up and then hitting the little red X next to address bar in IE prevents this popup. But there has to be an easier way. Not that taking 2 seconds to hit the x a zillion times is a big deal.

I just spent close to an hour in the new room with no trouble so hopefully it's gone now!

I had the same problem for a long time now. There is at least one questionable user who does not believe me. Now he has to eat crow.

as a side note i've found this pop up virus doo dad thing, turns off your windows firewall.. just warning folks out there...
