I've heard many accounts of Windows 8 automatically updating to 10 without permission. Fortunately my old Windows 7 laptop was determined to be incompatible with 10.

The new paradigm of Windows 10 as a cloud-based "service" rather than an OS is what is pushing me, as a non-gamer, to make my next computer purchase a Linux laptop, giving up on the Windows ecosystem entirely.

Yeah, everything got wiped. 🙁
I only managed to back up my artwork because I've lost that before with the last computer so I was HELLBENT on backing that up. XD

I still have my program licenses and stuff so when I need things i just reinstall them. It's not so bad.... until I think of something permanently lost. T__T

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to have frequent backups. Name brand USB sticks can now be had for $0.50 per GB. My favorite backup software is the powerful Dsynchronize, free at http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/

There are data recovery companies that can recover basically ANYTHING from ANY situation (for a small fortune).
Just google "data recovery/repair"

I would have sent my HDD to them to recover all of my stuff after it got wiped, but... Well suffice to say I read the contract and decided it would be in my best interest to NOT hand them my hard drive.

I'll just wait until the technology is available to recover the lost files myself.

For those who are technically inclined, I have heard good things about Recuva data-recovery software, which is available in a free version:

Funny. My Window 7 laptop was able to be updated to Window 10. But unfortunately, due to the issue I had and I had to clean off everything to start fresh, I'm stuck in Window 10 weather I like it or not. (Which in my case, I do like Window 10.) XD

Thankfully I backed up most of my stuff using the external hard drive, so I was lucky. Few I forgot to put in a safe place, but I don't think it's too serious. Sorry to those that lost everything because of the update, I'd be mad if I lost everything.

Windows 10 has been wonderful to me so far \o/
I'm so happy, after suffering 8 for so long LOL

I know it's shallow and a little petty, but the reason I don't like Windows 8 (besides the sound constantly screwing up on my Lenovo) is that I don't like how it looks. They tried so hard to make it this big fancy jazzi iPhone style set-up on steroids that they forgot to make it useable. I liked it when there was a "Start" button that brought up a series of sub-menus, so that you could quickly navigate to where you wanted to go. That's all I wanted - simple navigation, not a stupid slideshow with swish effects and big colourful icons flying around and connect to this and pinterest that and share everything with everyone ever.

And another thing - when did people decide that using heiroglyphics or other non-descriptive icons was an acceptable substitute for words such as "File", "Edit", "View" and "Help"? Microsoft Word, what happened!? You used to be so user friendly.

Other things I miss that are NOT Windows 8's fault:
- Websites with "number of visitors" counters
- Websites with guestbooks
- Websites where at least two of the pages lead to an "under construction" screen, complete with small animated gifs of construction workers
- Websites that played MIDI music in the background, forcing you to dive at your speakers
- Websites that featured a single repeating picture tiled as its background

I want a ring pop.

Fuck windows 10 up the arse with barbed wire.

OK, so that's a bit extreme, but I'm monumentally frustrated right now. So for the last month I have been trying to get a new laptop. A month ago I got a new Lenovo that ran on Win 8. Two weeks after I got it, it started hanging on the splash screen--turns out that this is just a problem some Lenovos have. After fiddling with it for ages, putting off going the half hour to where I got it I finally got off my butt and went back to Best Buy, returned it, asked them to wipe it clean, and got a new one (thankfully I never wiped my original laptop so lost very little).

YESTERDAY is when I did this, went and got a new one. HP, very good name, latest model, runs on windows 10. First impressions, this thing is fantastic, love having my start menu back, etc. Didn't have AVG but other family members in the house do, so I got my uncle to email me a copy for my new shiny laptop.

It sent to my spam folder and one misclick, clicking the message right below it, and I suddenly have win32/zperm, which is a ridiculously hard to get rid of virus. To do so, you have to g into the registry yourself, and that's waaay over my head--luckily again, windows 10 gives you the options of restoring all factory settings except keeping your files, so this lost me nothing on its own.

OK, now zperm's gone, thankfully. Unfortunately this triggered a secondary flaw in Windows 10--there is some registry error loop caused by an update that means it, too, hangs on the splash screen. So fuck me pink, I'm having the same problem on a second laptop.

I never deleted my files on my oldest laptop, a six year old Dell, which I'm writing this all from. It has no cam and the mic no longer works right, it takes thirteen minutes to restart, the 8 key is missing and just has the exposed white button instead, the o key sticks, it freezes up from time to time for no reason and still runs on Vista, but it's the most reliable thing I've managed to get my hands on lately -_-

Oh and apparently as of tonight the battery won't keep the charge so if it gets unplugged for 2 seconds straight it shuts off instantly.

So, yeah. Monumentally frustrated ._.

Bloody computers - you know they're not doing well when your telephone does the computers job more efficiently. Seems like people are releasing half-made products and quality testing them as they go. I'm sure that was always the case, but it seems much worse lately. Consoles, games, and other pieces of technology such as phones are particularly prone to this.

I wouldn't like to go to see a film, only to see unfinished CGI skeletons and crew members wandering around in shot and outtakes left in and the ending completely missing, only to be told "oh, yes, we're going to edit it and film the ending at some point, but we wanted to release it now to catch the summer rush". I'm no more thrilled at the prospect of buying a barely-tested game or computer.

And another thing - did I blink and miss Windows 9 or something?

Anyway, how's everyone doing? Read any good books lately?

After I wrote that post, I Googled "windows 9" out of curiosity, and no, you're absolutely right, there IS no 9. They went from 8 to 10. I was only JOKING when I asked if they'd skipped 9, but I guess truth is stranger than fiction.

Speaking of fiction, I've been trying to get back into reading a little bit lately, as I haven't been as good. I'm currently reading "Underboss", which is a true account ofSammy "The Bull" Gravano's life. Sammy the Bull was the Underboss in the Gambino crime family up until the late 80s or early 90s, when he turned Federal witness.

Mob stuff fascinates the absolute heck out of me. I love reading true accounts of people's lives, especially when those lives were dangerous, illegal, or risky, like a soldier or a mobster.

I've been reading the Noble Dead series by Barb and JC Hendee for several years now. I found out that I was several books behind and was so happy, immediately buying and whizzing through the first one. Only to find out that the next one isn't out in paperback yet, so I either wait till January or get a hardback for 27.00$ D'oh!

For Windows 8.1 and 10, I would recommend activating the built-in Windows Defender antivirus, which does as good a job as any other free product. If your surfing habits particularly expose you to viruses, I would recommend the paid Emsisoft Antimalware, currently $40 per year.

I love your analogy about electronics which are rushed to market -- it's spot on!

Aww man K I'm so sorry to hear about that. >_<
That does indeed sound frustrating!

And Senshi, to answer that question about Windows 9, it's said that coding issues were the reason it was skipped. (Due to Windows 95 and 98.) Microsoft's answer was just a joke of "because 7 ate 9" but pfff

I miss the desktop themes from Windows 98. Jungle, science, mystery - and MINESWEEPER!! Where's Minesweeper on Windows 8!? I feel like I lost a finger or something. I can't even find hearts or solitaire. And those sweet MIDI versions of Beethoven's Fur Elise and 5th Symphony. Plus that funky song that came with Windows XP, Like Humans Do (buried in the music folder).

I really do like 21st Century stuff as well, honest. Just tonight I watched "The Great Escape" on Netflix. Pure modern, selecting my TV on demand like I was at a restaurant or something. It's marvellous. 🙂

Everyone knows Windows doesn't count well how you think an xbox weent from 360 to 1 lol

HAHAHAHA!
thanks for that
because,

I caught some hate from a Mod on my first post of a forum I've been apart of, but never posted till today else where on the internet. This place has spoiled me to the individuals who wait to bare their fangs in every crevice of the WWW. So, I want to thank you all for being positive and hilarious folks. :coolthumbup
