I would hold off though as Nomura, who's directing it, is talking vaguely about changing things up:

When asked if the remake, in development for PlayStation 4, will follow the Final Fantasy VII narrative exactly or feature new elements, director Tetsuya Nomura gave GameSpot an ambiguous answer.

“We’ve announced an HD port version on the PlayStation 4, and then we have the remake coming to PS4,” Nomura said through a translator. “You’ll have this extremely, very, very pretty FFVII existing on the same plane. We feel that if that happens, it’s like, why have the same exact game?"

“We think that if a game is on a certain platform and that platform becomes obsolete, then we’d recommend playing the new port version,” he added.
 
I've been a huge fucking nerd and talked about what they can and can't do with friends. Or at least the different directions they can take and I'll vomit some of my thoughts here to share.

Also, SPOILERS FOR THIS 18 YEAR OLD GAME

Teen vs Mature rating: FF7 had a lot of fucked up content that will have to be toned down or removed. The Honey Bee Inn, Don Cornero's Mansion and his rapist agenda. This is definitely a different area of gaming where characters are much more realistic. Are we gonna see an actual burlesque house? Are we going to see Cloud collect a wig, perfume and panties to cross-dress his way into the mansion? I wouldn't mind it but it seemed more like a joke gag 18 years ago.

Cloud's personality: Are we gonna have him be Squall-depression like they seem to portray him in other media? Or are we going to have this brilliant subtely to his mental issues where everything seems 'off' about him, with delusions and how he portrays himself. Are we going to see him beat the shit out of Aeris or will that be handled off-screen?

For those confused, at the end of the Temple of Ancients, Cloud comes under Sephiroth's control and forces him to take the Black Materia from Aeris by attacking her. An uncomfortable scene.

Jenova: Holy shit those Jenova battles where you find a clone of Sephiroth and then BWUUUSSHH, giant Jenova boss? If it keeps a Teen rating, I feel we're not going to get a "The Thing" style monster where Sephiroth breaks apart and becomes Jenova.

For those confused, referring specifically to the ship hull battle where you find a Sephiroth clone, the model blinks twice, then you fight Jenova. After the battle, you find a lump on the ground and oh it was Jenova that crazy shapeshifting monster the entire time.

Cid's dirty, filthy, #%@%ing mouth: Is Cid going to change? I feel like we're not going to get the same potty mouthed Cid that once asked for his tea as "I want $%#$%$ #$@%!$ in my tea, and #%#$&* $*#$*@ three sugars, you #$#$&&$ $*)$#*@!"

I look forward to paying $10 for an Ultra Phoenix Down to get Aeris back.
 
On the other hand, there are games like Dark Souls and Mortal Kombat. I honestly think much of the game will stay the same.

Well it won't be completely the same as per Nomura's statement.

Thinking about it, I wouldn't mind the battle system to transition from the aged turn based to one like FF XV's system. Limit breaks could be implemented very very well if done right. I can picture it working really really well.

Well, if I'm to be completely honest, FF6 was a 2-D game and therefore has aged better than the 3-D games. FF7 was the 3-D game in the series with the most dire need of a remake.

That said, I wouldn't mind an FF6 remake at all. One of the best games in the series.

I'm just a fan of the original translation for the game. I never got over them changing Atma/Atma Weapon to Ultima/ Ultima Weapon.

The only thing I ask is that they do away with calling out the combo chain.

There's something awkward and cringeworthy about.

They do that in Xenoblade Chronicles, which is great because they shout the name of every ability they use.

I don't have an issue with it for some things, I mean I grew up with Shonen anime and Super Robot Mecha anime.

But seriously, you don't need to call out for slashing an enemy twice. Regular attacks don't need calling out, save it for special attacks that invoke some kind of magic or something.

A lot of people are complaining about it but I honestly think he's right. Now it just remains to be seen which battle system he's going to use.

The only problem I'll have gameplay wise is if they get rid of the open world.
 
I can't imagine they'd do something like that. The world itself was sort of a huge, huge part of the game.

Also I honestly don't see the problem with the current battle system myself (I mean, we've all seen this done in countless other games) but I wouldn't have a problem with them changing it to something a little more active.
 
I just want them to leave most of the story alone. They said that they're going to work on it, but I'm hoping that that just means that they're going to clean it up a bit and make it a bit easier to follow.
 
They're probably not gonna change that much at all, but I did hear about the ratings switch. I dunno, maybe the ESRB's ratings criteria have changed since the game came out?
