Lott was being honest. Honesty is the trait I admire most in people, even when I do not agree with them. As a white person, it riles me when white racists start throwing Ns around the room, thinking that because I'm white I agree with their feelings about those different from me.

The GOP has contempt for blacks, although they want their votes if they can fool them into buying the "big tent" lie. Lott pissed them off because he spilled the beans on them. Lott will die politically for almost every other Republicans' sins.

As a former Republican, I find this statement highly offensive. You are making an ignorance-based blanket statement about an entire group of people, which is the exact same thing that actual racists do. Do not allow your political fervor to turn itself into hatred of the opposition. "Liberals" casting blame unilaterally upon "conservatives," and vice versa, accomplishes nothing but the blind polarization of political debate. This is the main reason for my abandonment of partisan politics.

all lott said was a kind word to an old man, and it's been twisted, and bent all out of shape! the word segregation never entered his head, let alone come out of his mouth!

Yes, the media are making a mountain out of a molehill and the molehill has been around for 30 years. Why is this an issue now? Lott has always been a scumbag, like Thurmond and Sharpton. Why are people only upset about this smarmy little racist now? He should keep his job, and let the voters of Mississippi decide what to do with him in 2006. That's called democracy.

I do not think Lott is a racist. He just got caught up in the heat of the moment and said some things without thinking first. But who here is not guilty of that.

The ones who are making a big deal with this are Lott's political opponents who are using this as their own "political meal ticket" to further their own agendas.


At worst, Lott is a career politican who speaks from both sides of his mouth.

Very good, Ice. Can you believe asutickler? He takes me to task for not citing examples of Lott's bigotry. Well if dude wants examples, all he would have had to do is pick up any newspaper or news magazine since the Thurmond birthday party incident (did Strom use leaf blower to extinguish his candles?) and the evidence would all be laid out for him. Don't Arizona State students read newspapers?

And guess why Lott, Thurmond and the rest of them switched from the Dems to the GOP during Nixon's Southern strategy. It was race, only race. Nixon turned the GOP from the "party of Lincoln" to the party that gave a nod and a wink to bigotry.

The point I think folks are making is that as frustrated as the anti-Lott folks are about his comments....those who don't comdemn him nearly to death for his words are just as frustrated that others have similar philosphies and are not treated in this manner of scrutiny.

I understand that his position in the government has more to do with it than any other factor, but the conversations have become strictly about how he has "obvious" hatred of anyone who is not white and not about his ability to be a political figure. *shrug* If we're going to focus on THAT thought process, then anyone in a position of power is open game for nastiness thrown at Lott. I heard on the radio today that an Associated Press reporter was pulling comments from old press that quoted many a politician who have made racist remarks. I'd like to know if anyone could find that list. Sorry I haven't managed yet.

I said from the onset that I think his insensitivity alone makes him a less than ideal leader. His personal views are something I don't particularly care about as long as he is an effective Senator; however, his saying what he did had an impact on that. I can't lie and say I don't like Lott. Ive personally known him and his family the better part of my life. I like them. I like him. If that makes me horrible, then so be it that I think this scum of the earth racist to be basically a nice man. 🙄 I don't think he needs to keep his job, but I think there are FAR WORSE PEOPLE than Lott even right here on the TMF with attitudes FAR WORSE on both sides.

Y'all, please just take a big deep breath. Too many one line posts are being made that have no content other than, "You're wrong. I hate you and your kind." Can't ya do better then that?
