People here are pretty freaked by the situation. People I work with refuse to walk to the gas station less than a block away. I put off getting gas this week, because this guy is obviously staking out gas stations. Every where you go, folks are uneasy. And there is a lot of speculation that this person might be warming up for something bigger. Or that the truck he's driving might be rigged with a bomb. It's nerve wracking. Pray this never happens in your neighborhood.

Media...

WHY are we giving out details about things that can only help this idiot? If he ACTUALLY has a burned out taillight, why would you continually play that info up on every report? Am I to believe that we now have staked out every AutoBarn or car supply house in the entire area? I don't think so....and unless he's an idiot of immense proportions, he'll soon be using a vehicle other than a white minivan, IF he /she was ever actually using one. The case does need publicity, in order to heighten public observance, but this is ludicrous in terms of common sense tactics. :sowrong: Q

ASHLAND, Va. (AP) - A 37-year-old man was shot and wounded while he and his wife walked to their car in a steakhouse parking lot Saturday night. Authorites were investigating whether the Washington-area sniper had struck again, for the first time on a weekend.

Good news! If one is even only an accomplice, there are enough offences of sufficient gravity to drop them both in a dark hole for the rest of their lives. Being in DC, the death penalty isn't an option.

Sad to say, neither of the men in custody is affiliated with the actual sniper. They are 24 and 34 year old illegal immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala, respectively, who are getting the boot as we speak (deported). Wrong place, wrong time, is what one official said... although there's been talk that they were pulling some sort of scam to cash in on the sniper... which would be pretty damn sick of them.


As for the death penalty... DC may not have it, but Maryland and Virginia both do. When they catch this guy, he's going to spend the last 10 or less years of his life on death row.

Either way, I'm happy. This is one of those situations where people will be demanding that the army step in before too much longer. Direct a soloution that that may be, it's not too favourable to have armed troops running around your capital city.

Hmmmm. I think if you were going for someone in the military to resolve something this delicate, then "ugg factor" is the last thing you'd pick them on. Something like this needs special forces to do. I guess being Americans, you'll have to make do with the Delta Force. :blaugh: 😀 😛 😉
 
The military is already involved, at least as far as providing reconnaissance planes and helicopters to search for the guy from the air.

And I can't say it's particularly reassuring to think of having counter-snipers posted outside every gas station and parking lot in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C.

I have a special interest in seeing this guy found, as my brother and his family live just outside Richmond. We're all pretty nervous for them, but they're trying to go about their lives normally.

Point taken Shem, but that's not what I meant. After Oklahoma, laws went through congress on the nod, that allow the US military to intervene in the event of civil disturbance or unrest. That would probably include the chaos in DC right now. People are locking themselves in, but it might come to troops on the streets if the body count keeps rising so expidentially.
 
I haven't hit this thread until now. So, I guess it's about time to do so.

IF they catch this guy alive, I just hope the hell they go by the book on every last detail so he doesn't get off on some technicality. However, should they mess up and he DOES get off on a tech, I think you'll see something reminicent of Magnum Force. He isn't likely to last long. I suspect he won't allow himself to be taken, though.

As for military involvement...I believe there are very strict rules for declaring martial law and bringing them in to do more than help with patrols. Bringing in a sniper (or 2 or 3 or more) isn't likely to help. Snipers are great if you have the intel to set things up. But, this guy is all over the place. That's not a situation for being taken out by a sniper...unless they catch up with and corner him somewhere.

While I think they've gone too far in some of the reporting and commentary, I think the media should be allowed to cover this. However...since they so love to scoop one another and pass along information leaks, I think officials should start using that to set the guy up. Let him think they're looking elsewhere or whatever. If the media wants to play a role, let them be PLAYED to play that role.

I haven't seen the news since last evening. Then, the were talking about open threats towards school kids and demands for money. Frankly, I have no idea if those are from the actual sniper or not...though it sounded as though the threats were. I've never been much of an advocate for the death penalty. But, in cases like this, I have to admit that I'm all for it.
