FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Two men, one of them described as an Army veteran who recently converted to Islam, were arrested at a roadside rest stop Thursday for questioning in the three-week wave of deadly sniper attacks that have terrorized the Washington, D.C. area.

The arrests - linked to a telephoned boast about a deadly Alabama robbery - raised hopes of a conclusion to the intensive and often frustrating investigation of the shootings that have killed 10 people and critically wounded three others since Oct. 2.

The men taken into custody were not immediately charged in the sniper attacks, but authorities made it clear the arrests were considered pivotal. A newspaper report said the men were motivated by anti-American bias; police in Washington state, where the men recently lived, said they were not part of any organized group.

"There's a strong feeling these people are related to the sniper shootings," said Douglas Gansler, state's attorney in Maryland's Montgomery County, where the sniper task force is based. Asked if he believed the sniper was still at large, he said "no."

I read they found a rifle in their vehicle that matches the type of rifle they believe was used in the sniper attacks. Plus all the digging they did in Tacoma last night was in a location where at least one of them used to live.

If one of them is truly only 17... How sad that a kid would go SO wrong, so young.

Pretty impressive investigative work on this. I know they can't lay out all the details but I still find it quite impressive.

I had heard that they had a bullet casing from a previous shooting, with this guys fingerprint on it. They've been looking for this guy for a while.

Nope, I don't need to. Whatever culture he comes from (even if he's had military experience, because that could have possibly been an experience gathering excercise; it would'nt be the first time after all) is almost certainly a culture or set-up that would cause him to hate Americans. Also bear in mind that snipers with a grudge who are doing something professionally, almost hardly ever work alone. While he's staring down the scope there's always someone nearby acting as his alarm guard. If there's two of them involved, (even if only one did the shooting) then there's a high possibility of fundamentalist involvement.

Cultural sadness...

I'm sad because we can only execute them once....which is far more merciful a fate than they dealt to others. As someone else already said, I hope the authorities are moving slowly, thoroughly and carefully to make sure there's no slipups in collecting evidence that will be conclusive.

A bit over the top?

I just watched the full unedited press conference given by Police Chief Moose, is it just me or was it just a bit over the top? I started to think I was watching the "Oscars" or some kind of TV award ceremony rather than the long over due announcement of the arrest of a serial killer.

BUT I hope that we won't be so blinded by justice that we give them injustice in trial. Remember, they still could be innocent...

Re: a few thoughts

I'm glad they were caught and I can only hope that justice is brought down swiftly and harshly. These two are monsters who have no right to live.

This is why it is so hard to settle the death penalty dispute. People like this really dont deserve to live.
