Do any forum members have problems with insects coming into their homes? I have the weirdest problem. My windows are always shut, as are my doors, and my A/C is on, and yet, I am perpetually getting Wasps coming into my room. I usually get at least several during the warm weather, and just killed my second one this week. This one I just killed particularly infuriated me, as I am home doing work this morning, and I was barefoot, and nearly stepped on the little SOB.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can possibly do to keep these little buggers out of here, especially when I already have my windows and doors shut, and my windows are taped up?

Mitch

In my house at Amherst that I share with several people, we have a bug problem. Possibly due to the fact that my housemates never take care of organic trash, despite repeated warnings.

Buy Raid. Spray it across all the windows and doors. Walk around the outside your house and look for anthills; spray those. Look inside in cabinets, under the sink, etc--maybe there's a crack and the ants are coming through there.

And, of course, immediately dispose of any and all organic trash ASAP.

Thanks for the advice. I live in an apartment, Veggie. A two story dwelling, with eight apartments in the building. They dont come in here looking for garbage. I wonder if they sneak in through the A/C vents, or if maybe I have a nest under my bedroom window.

Mitch

Do you have an attic? We've been getting some wasps in the house this summer too and that's where they seem to be coming from, there are a couple places in the ceiling where they can get through. I'm scared to death of the things!

No, siamese, no attic. All that you see if you go outside in my hallway is a regular ceiling, no trap doors. Also, we dont have an attic inside the apartment, either, just a regular ceiling.
Yes, I know about being scared of them. I'm better than I used to be, in that I can kill them now. It's just annoying to have them in here so often, especially when I have my windows and doors shut.

hmm when i first opened this thread i thought you meant white anglo saxon protestant lol..but i'm not sure how you can keep wasps from entering your home..they also seem to get in here also at times, and they are so hard to kill that usually i try to get them on a fly swatter and hurry them outside..just opening a door to the outside will get them to come in, without you even seeing them..also finally i know what a wasp sting feels like, as i was stung for the first time in my life by a bee of any type on my upper inner arm..and did it sting..and it started to swell up, and i was sure i was going to die lol.not knowing if i was deathly allergic..i sat there and waited for my throat to begin swelling shut..hyperventilating and the like, and david said take benadryl and no you aren't allergic..which obviously i wasn't because here i am..

Ack, sorry to hear about the sting. I have only been stung one time in my life. I got stung, through my jeans, on my ass, when I was about 14. Suddenly, I felt this burning sensation on my backside. I picked at my jeans, and found a yellow and black insect in my hand. I promptly threw it down, went into my house, and looked. Sure enough, I had a big red mark on my ass. The little bugger Yellow Jacket had stung me right on my ass.
I came very close to sting number two this morning. Had I taken one more step, I would have gotten stung. My grandmother got stung once in the bottom of her foot, on her lawn, while hanging laundry. I just hate stinging insects.

They might be getting into the vents, Mitch. That's where they come from here. The whole place is sealed up too! Recently they have been getting in through the fireplace, so i think they've made a nest somewhere. Raid makes an excellent wasp killer. I would definitely suggest getting that. Will the Apartment Management let you get someone to spray? Or maybe you can suggest that they spray the whole building? Some apartments offer to do that for their tenants.

Hope you get rid of the little suckers...I hate wasps!

the thing i hate about wasps is trying to kill them..the last time i attempted to, the wasp wouldn't die..and as i was hitting and hitting that thing, i started to cry...sighs..i so hate killing anything, even a wasp..

Thanks, Tamia. I have Raid. Oh, and if you want something even stronger to kill them, that works even better than Raid, I find, is a product called Hot Shot. Raid usually takes a long time to kill the thing, after it is stunned. With Hot Shot, one or two sprays, and the thing is dead.
I might well stop by the office and have a discussion with them about the wasp problem. I know they do spray for bugs here. I'm not sure if they can control what happens through the A/C vents, but I can try.

Mitch

Izzy, I am a very gentle person, but one thing I have no problem killing is a bee or wasp. If that thing is going to sting me, I am like to it:" Die, you little bastard!". What is frustrating is when you keep spraying and spraying and it will not die. Hotshot is better than Raid, and has helped at least some.

Well, once we where going to paint the house inside. So we had a great time trying to shoot the big yellow stripes wasp with airguns, when they run around the walls. Not a chance when they fly. I was very good fun!!.
But if you are not close to painting is not such a good method.

don't hate me. I'm a nice guy- honest...

That's funny. I thought the same thing 🙂 .

:xbee: Mitchell, my take it with a grain-of-salt advice is that if you've seen more than one wasp in your pad, the nest is nearby. So if you have some time on your hands the next time you see a wasp, do not kill it. Follow it and see where it goes. It will lead you back to the nest or at least to its entry point into your room (I've done this before successfully with wasps and bees). If you can locate the nest (I'm sorry for suggesting this- I'm not a big fan of killing things, either, but this in an instance where they are not living with you in peace and harmony) you can buy a bomb (comes in an aerosal can with a straw-like nozzel) to destroy it. You have to spray into the nest after dark when they are sleeping like a thief in the night  . Or perhaps their entry point can simply be sealed up  . At any rate, I hope nobody calls me a wasp-killer. I had several run-ins with wasps when I used to be doing work on my folk's property, and they weren't pretty. When you get attacked, it's often by multiple wasps because you've disturbed the nest.

Hmm, maybe it's better to consult a professional vermin exterminator if you find a nest.. just in case of: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee: :xbee:

You've been reduced to one bee 😉 .

I've used a bomb two times that I can remember with total success (no stings- no more wasps). But I wouldn't recommend using it during the day or if you see activity around the nest. As for hiring an exterminator if you choose to go this path, I say let them earn their pay. Let them find the entry point and nest.

if you are going to wipe out a nest, definitely wait til the sun goes down..we had a wasp's nest on the back porch..wasps were swarming around it all day..best time is at night when they go dormant..

OMG~you guys are SO giving me the heebie jeebies! I am totally allergic to bees, I cannot imagine what a wasp would do to me~how do you deal with it

disclaimer: I have nothing of value at all to add to this discussion, I just felt like sharing... :cry1:

steph love everything you post has value..and we are talking about stings also, besides getting rid of wasps..are you deathly allergic? i suggest benadrl or a trip to the ER

Izzy is right. If you are concerned about a nest or such around your windows or possibly the vent the best time to check is at dusk or dawn, when they are becomming inactive. We had where I live 2 wasp nest outside the front porch up underneath the front awning. I found this foaming formula wasp/hornet spray that works up to 20 feet away. I spray it from a safe distance where the nest is, and then RUN LIKE HELL back inside. At night Ill get the good ol water hose, put it at the jet setting and destroy the nest.
Seems to get rid of them.
But do check your vents, also others could be letting them in and they get into your area by just being around.
Just be aware theyre around.....and hopefully you wont get stung.
But do keep a sting kit around just in case.

Rob

One does not want to blow up a bee or wasp nest in the daytime. I have Barry Williams (Greg from the Brady Bunch, for those who dont know his real name) autobiography. Anyhow, he wrote that one time, to impress his friends, he blew up a bees' nest with a cherry bomb during the day, and a swarm attacked him, and they stung him about 20 times in the face. Hell, it hurt enough when I had one sting in the ass. No way am I risking 20 or more.
I do suspect there could be a nest underneath my window, or maybe they are coming in through the vents. I probably should talk to the management, and see what they suggest.

i have a similar problem with wasps outside my place, i have two wooden decks which are getting old, and they love to build their nests in between the boards and under them. every year i blast the hell out of them with HOT SHOT and several other products, every year they die , but the next year they keep coming back. i hate them, but every year i have to fight with them. im no expert, but it seems once they find a "spot" they like, they seem to want to keep going back to it, even after you've killed hundreds of them. i wonder if they have some kind of weird pattern they follow as to where they like to nest? :ranty:

Right Tamia, they will nest in an unused fireplace. The way to solve that problem is build a small fire, the heat and smoke will drive them out.In Mitch'es case, treating the whole building will not solve his problem. To take care of wasp's you must find the nest and treat it directley. And most of the time they are not aggresive.I walk up to within a foot or two of nest's everyday and hit them with wasp-freeze,which is a commercial brand of hot-shot.Mitch if you want to p.m. me i will try to help if i can.

Thanks, bug, appreciated, my friend. I sent you the PM. Looking forward to hearing from you when you can.

There must be somewhere else that they're getting in. I'd have someone come and take a look. Drew's sister had them in the walls at her house once. In the meantime, if you have a Lowes nearby, they carry a sonic repelant that you just plug into an outlet. It's good for bats, mice and many different insects. I actually used it to get rid of bees in a nest outside a skylite in one of my old apartments. It really works. I think you can find it in the same area with bug sprays and stuff. But, they should be able to point you to it if you don't see it. (You can probably get it other places too. But, I know they carry them.)

If you've ever wondered

why so many porch ceilings are painted a sky blue, it's
to prevent the wasps from building nests on them. It
fools the wasps into thinking that it's the sky, and they
go elsewhere. It's not practical to do that inside your
house, but any outside areas you can reach, decks, eaves,
porch ceilings, etc, which can be painted, can help
deter wasps from landing and nesting there.
